SAN Copy from CX300 to VNX5300 File - Step missed ?

Hello EMC specialists,

I would like to get your help on a SAN copy problem that I met :

Source system :

CX300 - Flare 24 release 006

SAN Copy/E enabler installed

Destination system : VNX 5300 - SAN Copy installed

My problem :

I have followed the steps detailed in the white paper "Migrating Data from an EMC Clarion Array to a VNX Platform using SAN Copy".

But when I need to enter the WWN, the button is grey.

The SAN Copy connections have been verified several times on both sides :

On the CX300 :

Connectivity Status : the VNX ports are listed.

SAN Copy - Connections summary : the WWNs of the VNX ports are logged and registered.

In the Storage Group selected, the SAN Copy connection with the VNX (the GUI gives the Hostname of the VNX) is selected, and updated.

On the VNX 5300 :

In the destination Storage Group selected, the SAN Copy connection with the CX300 (the GUI gives the Hostname of the CX300) is selected, and updated.

Please check my printscreens.

If I try via CLI from the CX300 :

C:\Program Files\EMC\Navisphere CLI>naviseccli -h 192.168.99.230 -User admin -Password 260895 -Scope 0 sancopy -create -name Sessi

Information : both SAN switches are with default configuration, without zones. Could be a problem ?

Thank you vey much for your help.

EMC does not suppport "open" zoning for fiber channel - the switches MUST be zoned following EMC's best pratice. Since you will be using SAN Copy, you must use single-initiator, single-target zoning for each host HBA to each SP port.

In an "open" switch, SAN Copy will not work correctlty, plus the entire array configuration is not supported.

why is there only one connection, how did you do your zoning ?

Hello Dynamox,

On the customer's site, on both SAN switches, there is no configuration at all.

All ports see all ports : the default Brocade configuration, it is that I have found :-(

These DS220B will be replaced by new DS300B tomorrow.

But I have verified that VNXSPA2 see CX300SPA0, A3 to A1, etc.

Do you think that if zoning is not setup, this could be the problem ?

Best regards.

Hello Glen,

Thank you for your feedback.

I completely agree that this customer's configuration was unacceptable. As previously mentioned, both EMC Connectrix DS 220B switches have been replaced, initialized, and upgraded to the latest code.

I have also implemented the appropriate zoning, for all servers, and also for SAN Copy :

CX300-A0 to VNX5300-A2

CX300-A1 to VNX5300-A3

CX300-B0 to VNX5300-B2

CX300-B1 to VNX5300-B3

All the configuration works fine.

After that, I have still the same problem, I cannot enter the target array WWN, the button is grey.

But the situation is more clear : in Unispahere, I have a message that SAN Copy connections are incorrect.

But I can only activate a connection on CX300 ports A1 and B1, so I double check with your answer and I go back to you that your are right.

I will go back on site tomorrow to try again :

I wil setup again only on CX300 A1 to VNX5300-A3 and CX300-B1 to VNX5300-B3, and I will diconnect all other connections.

I will keep you informed.

Thank you for your help.

Best regards.

Hello Dynamox,

Thank you for your feedback.

I have checked the ownership on both arrays, my LUN test is on SPA.

I take care on that, I know that it is a prerequisite.

I will try to setup again tomorrow when I will be back on the customer's site, I have to remove the connections A0 and B0 on the CX300, to keep only one active port per SP..

Best regards.

Hello Dynamox,

Very strange :

The SAN Copy connections are OK on both arrays.

One Storage Group has one connection to SP A and another on SP B.

It was not possible to get the button WWN to enter the target LUN WWN in Navisphere.

But with naviseccli, it was possible to create the sessions if only the source and destination LUNs are on SP A.

One example :

>NaviSeccli.exe -user admin -password 260895 -scope 0 -address 192.168.99.230 sancopy -create -name SC_LUN301 -srcwwn 60:06:01:60:FC:90:1C:00:3A:B8:0B:E6:0A:15:DC:11 -destwwn 60:06:01:60:38:41:30:00:4F:72:25:2B:7E:A6:E1:11 -throttle 10 -verify

Make sure that all destination LUNs are not less than the source LUN in size.
Do you want to create a copy descriptor now? (y/n) y

>

When the session was created, after it was possible to change the properties in graphic mode.

So I have trespassed the luns owned by SPB, and all my SANCopy sessions were successful.

But only 2 sessions active at one time.

Thank you for your help.

Best regards.

Raphlou.

something is not right with either zoning or SanCopy registration, in normal circumstances you should not have to trespass LUNs.

can you run this command to see if the number of concurrent session can be increased:

navicli -h <SP_IP_address> sancopy -settings -list
