Resize LUN question
Hello,
I've recently been asked to expand 12 LUNs on our CX4-480. In my research it looks like MetaLUNs are the quickest way to accomplish this. However, I want to know the difference between migrating a LUN to a larger LUN size or using a MetaLUN. Do they both accomplish the same end objective? I'm concerned about maintaining data integrity. Is one method "better" than the other?
Thanks for the information,

Hi johnsonk1024
Migrating a LUN to a larger LUN takes a performance hit and migration time depends on several factors like LUN Size, Disk SIze, I/O etc.
As far as Expansion is concerned it has different meaning and there are two methods to expand a LUN. This topic has been discussed several times in CLARiiON Support Forums. You may follow the result of a search query "metalun" for the same.
Moreover, for detailed understanding on metaLUNs Please, refer to EMC MetaLUN Concept[link]

With MetaLUN you can achieve more performances, simply by spreading the I/O over many drives. In terms of provisioning you can expand the MetaLUN without creating more additional LUNs. Here you can find more detailed information:

Are these LUN used for Boot from LUN for Hosts? If yes, since the size of the LUN is not that big. IMHO, LUN migration will be better option than LUN expansion considering the size (small) of the LUN.

The current LUNs are small, only 64GB each. As part of a software upgrade they will expand to 134GB. The current LUN is part of a RAID 1_0/FC group composed of 14 disks, 7 disks on two DAEs. The RAID group has over 1.4TB of free space so I'd like to increase the LUN size within the current RAID group without spanning multiple RAID groups, if possible.

I don't think LUN migration will work because these LUNs are part of a storage group. Will it damage the data to break the storage group and recreate it after the LUN migration?

It doesn't matter. No it will not damage the data.
