raid type - storage pool and lun

should the storage pool raid level be the same as the lun?

the storage pool I have is raid1_0

when I start creating a lun, i can select different raid level types

RAID is actually operating at the LUN Level, not the RAID Group level…

When you first create a RAID Group Navisphere/Unisphere will let you select a RAID type which helps to make sure you use the correct number of disks for the RAID type you want to use. But, other than showing the RAID type in the RG details, it doesn’t actually do anything in the RG itself.

When you create the first LUN in that RAID Group you can select any RAID type that is valid for the number of disks in the RAID Group. You can select a different RAID type from what was previously selected for the RAID group itself. This will change the whole RAID Group. All LUNs in the RAID Group after the first LUN MUST be the same RAID type as the first LUN.

(2) (4) (6) or (8)

RAID 10

Fibre Channel

Clar_r10

Ok if the Storage pool you have is Clar_r10 then the number of the drives in the pool can be 2,4,6,8. Best recommendation for the lun creation would be using the same raid type for the luns too. Would help in future if you want to create meta.

Hi,

Ruapl is correct…

Actually you cannot select different Raid Level (if you have storage Pools only with Raid Level 1_0 ) to create a new LUN. However, if you have different Storage Pools with different Raid Level and if you select other Raid Level (for example Raid 5) , then the Storage Pool for new LUN will also changes to the Pool which pertains to Raid Level 5.

Correct me if I am wrong guys….

When you first create a Raid Group, the raid type is blank. When you create the first LUN, you choose the raid type for the LUN and that sets the raid type on the raid group. Whenever you create a new LUN and use that Raid Group, you can only use the raid type set on the group.

Wnen you create a Pool, you pick the raid type when you create the Pool. Once you do that, when you create a new LUN, the drop down will allow you to select a raid type IF you have another Pool with a different raid type. You can not create a LUN with a different raid type in a Pool.

Storage Pools require a CX4 running FLARE28 or higher or a VNX. In addition, the Thin Provisioning (or Virtual Provisioning) enabler needs to be installed on the array.

when i go create a new storage pool. I see the default storage pool type is raid group only and no other choice available.

when i go ahead and create it, its only a raid group.

what is the requirement to create a storage pool?

It is a separate license but I believe it’s available without charge now, check with your sales team.
