Proper procedure for CX3-10C SP replacement

We have a SP (SPB) which I am a bit suspect is going out.  Currently we have no support aggreement with EMC, but we do happen to have a spare SP available.  Since I am having problems finding information no how to properly hotswap out a SP, can someone direct me to information or detail it here on how I would go about swapping the problematic SP for one we have available to replace it?

Thanks.

If SP is to be replaced, the procedure can be generated from the Clariion Procedure Generator (can be downloaded from EMC Powerlink). The steps for replacement can be concluded as,

   1. Note down the cache settings (Read and Write cache size)

   2. Disable read/write cache (if not already disabled)

   3. Set cache values to Zero

   4. Label all the cables on the SP to be replaced.

   5. Remove the faulty SP

   6. Insert the new SP with all the cables back in position.

   7. Confirm the SP boot ups properly.

   8. Re-enter cache values as earlier and enable cache.

Hope this helps

Hi,

Welcome to EMC Forum..

May I know why you are suspecting that the SP is nearly getting faulted please?

Thanks for the information on the procedure.  I actually went to find the Clariion Procedure Generator and found through some research that it's no longer something that's available for a customer to download from Powerlink.  Instead, several sources pointed to this link as the thing to use instead: http://www.emc.com/clariionsupport (after looking, this is the same link referenced in the post linked to by Suman).

Interestingly enough, there were procedures there for doing about everything with a CX3-10c *except* replacing the SP.  I'll just roll with the steps you gave as there is no information on that site for the procedure on an SP replacement.

Suman,

I'm suspect of it because we had a major problem several weeks back where one of our disks in the DAE went bad (not necessarily abnormal) and then while the hotspare was being rebuilt, SPB suddenly rebooted imporperly and we wound up losing some data.  I can't remember the exact event in the logs, but the error more or less indicated directly that the SP rebooted in a way it shouldn't have.

Move ahead to recently where I updated the FLARE on our CX3-10C to the latest code and SPB was acting unresponsive and odd long after I updated the code on the unit.  It would appear as unmanaged and unresponsive to queries to it.  It appears to be fine now, but it was acting very odd for a little while after the FLARE update.  This wasn't immediately after the update where I know the units are still working to come online fully after reboots, etc.

I'm just going to keep an eye on it for now, but it's been acting a bit off lately--just SPB specifically.

Location?  It was one of the vault drives.  Which one of 0-4, I don't exactly recall right now.  I'm thinking it was DAE 0 Drive 0, though.

Vault drive failure may cause some unexpected behavior of SP. If its drive 0_0_0 it should not be a cause for the SP-B reboot.

Well in order to check what caused the reboot you may check SP Events during the time of the reboot.

If you suspect it could be due to any Vault Drive failure then try to check CRU Down message for Dsk 0.0.1 & 0.0.3.

Yes, Clariion Procedure Generator has a lot to offer!
