Powerpath 5.6 p02 and Oracle ASM on 11g which device to use

Hi Guys

     Could anyone tell me which emcpower device i should use when creating ASM devices. I have 2 emcpower devices a and b and i have followed the Oracle instructions for creating a partition on the emcpower devices.

Now under /dev i have

emcpowera

emcpowera1

emcpowerb

emcpowerb1

I'm assuming the additional "1" devices are the there because i created a partition could anyone confirm ?

ASM can use the "1" devices but not the original emcpowera and b device's. I can use a force command to use the original devices but i just wanted to see if anyone has come across this before?

Hi Dynamox

Thanks for the quick reply :-)

yes i follwed the 11gr2 rac prep guide from oracle and created a partition with the specified oracle offset etc.

i now have the emcpowera and emcpowera1 device and the ASM seems to pick up and work correctly with the emcpowera1

does  the 1 refer to the "1" partition you cretaed when you fdisk the emcpower device?

i assume that you fdisk the powerpath device and created an aligned partition, you want to use the partition when you create your ASM device :

$ /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk ASMLV119 /dev/emcpowermd1

$ /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk ASMLV120 /dev/emcpowerme1
