Non-Sequential Enclosure IDs
Hello,
I am starting work on a CX4-240 that currently has eight DAE's with the following enclosure ID's:
Bus 0 Enclosure 0
Bus 0 Enclosure 1
Bus 0 Enclosure 2
Bus 0 Enclosure 5
Bus 1 Enclosure 0
Bus 1 Enclosure 1
Bus 1 Enclosure 2
Bus 1 Enclosure 6
Obviously the last DAE on each bus has had its enclosure ID incorrectly set (it should be Bus 0 Enclosure 3 and Bus 1 Enclosure 3). I am required to add 8 more DAE's to this system, but I am concerned that the incorrect enclosure ID's will cause problems. I have not been able to locate any KB articles that explain what to do in this scenario.
Is it possible to add the 8 DAEs to the system (4 more on each bus), with the remaining enclosure IDs given that I will need to connect lower ID enclosures to the higher ID enclosure?
i.e
Bus 0 Enclosure 5 would daisy to Bus 0 Enclosure 3
Would this work?

Hope the cabling was checked. And is this enclosure moved from another array or a new one?
How was the installation done?
Are we daisy chaining or reverse cabling?
Right now is the array under production? We might require a powercycle if the cablings and onther paramenters are correct.

Hi Sheron,
Thanks for the prompt reply. This system has been in production for a long time and I must admit I am not familiar with when the last enclosures may have been added. It is certainly possible they came from another array and whoever added the DAE did not change the enclosure ID. All of these enclosures have Pools / RG's spanning them.
These DAE's are daisy chained to eachother.

I have seen this happen when an enclosure form another array is used.
Honestly I thing this is more like a cosmetic thing than anything if you still see and access the data, coz if not then the data would be compromised, however here as data is good.. you should be able to use the space if you are to add the rest of the enclosure.
There used to be incorrect numbering on the VNX series, which is an elder brother of the clarrion.
What happens when you use a pre-used enclosure is that it gets automatically assigned an enclosure number on the bus. At a
later time, if that enclosure gets re-cabled to a different location on the same bus, it will keep the enclosure number
already assigned to it. This may result in a non-sequential enclosure numbering on the bus. Non-sequential enclosure numbering on a VNX bus has no negative impacts other than the cosmetic impact.
However since this seems to be a production system I'd be a lil careful.
Maybe they were not configured the way it should have.
Try this http://corpusweb130.corp.emc.com/ns/NS120_NS480/maintain/CRU/ns_120_480_960_dae_add.pdf
Tho its for NAS attached Clarr, the page 6 would be same for us as well.
Use USM and lets make sure we configured it well.
Since you said Daisy chained then I'd assume that the cabling would be fine.
P-S : Its been ~2 years since i worked on the clariion, so if this info was not useful enough please let me know. I ll try to see if there are any other way to get this sorted.
If you need more info on USM then use the knowledge base article
Knowledge Base Article: 000013700
What is the Unisphere Service Manager (USM)? (000013700)
Version:1
And also pasting the VNX issue. (Please do check if this is ok for a clariion array too)
Knowledge Base Article: 000014585
How to number VNX Series DAE enclosures sequentially (000014585)
Version:1
Also your question "
Bus 0 Enclosure 5 would daisy to Bus 0 Enclosure 3
Would this work?"
Assuming ( I hate assuming in real time scenarios) 0_3 has never been in system , yes i would think it should work if you add it. The numbering would or would not be the same, however the array should detect the new enclosure.
Is it recommended?? I don't think there is any chance of this to be recommended
Will it run? " I would think so
"
Will it give you any problem in the future ? " Oh yes it will"

Hi Sheron,
We've had to delay some of the migrations that would enable us to transfer these enclosures. I'll update this thread once I start doing the migrations.
Thanks!
