no FC cable connection/lights
I am trying to simply hook up a Dell EMC2 KAE 0W4572 to an FC hub or an HBA card on a computer. I know it should connect at 2 or 4 GB at least, not sure about 1GB because it has the green/blue LED on front to show the speed. If i connect the HSSDC connector to itself or another storage processor the amber LED on back lights up, so I know that works. I have tried 2 solutions, one is connect it with an SFP-to-HSSDC cable to an LSI logic card. the other is using a Stratos MHSDC-8-8-1-V 2.125GB HSSDC-to-LC inline adapter, and then to an emulex card. neither of these did the amber light come on or show any other signs of connection. what is going wrong here?

ecosolar,
So just to make sure I understand, you are trying to present a DAE directly to a host (either direct attached and/or via a switch) and bypass the necessary Storage Processors?

As I understand it, a clariion storage processor is basically a computer (based on windows NT/2000). It would be possible to present it to another computer with the proper fiber channel link. and, no i dont have a storage processor at the moment, just a few of these DAE's. Anyway, really I am just trying to get the physical link to connect at this point, and kind of scratching my head as to why it is so difficult. 2Gb/s or 4Gb/s FC is the same everywhere isnt it?

ecosolar,
You have overly simplified the relationship between the SP's and the DAE's. While you are fundamentally correct about the SP's, you still need an Operating Environment (such as FLARE) to make sense out of the raw drives and the hardware. The SP's act as the translation layer between the backend (DAE's) and front-end connectivity (hosts).

right. well, the FLARE is there on the hard drives. I have used linux in the past with ZFS or BTRfs and Samba or NFS to create volumes and shares. I did just get the LSI logic card to work and the lights came on, and the card showed all the raw drives, but something happened. either that card is very unreliable or i shorted it to the motherboard somehow because it is at a 90 deg angle. the green light comes on on the DAE but the card doesnt show a connection.

the drives in the disk enclosure are not formatted at 512/sector.

yeah, i know. I have formatted them to 520/sector before using the linux shell. actually surprisingly easy.

Just to follow up, I had another empty KAE box and tried it with that and same thing, the LSI Logic HBA showed a connection once, possibly if I hooked them up in a certain order, but then shows no connection. The KAE green LED seems to always show a connection. I wonder if it is shutting me out somehow, but there are no drives, hence no FLARE in that box, and same behavior.
