No connection to CX-4
Hi Team,
maybe some of you has already bumped into the following problem I am facing with, and can help me:
I have a CX4-120 EMC storage with a lot of servers connected to it. After a power outage, the CX-4 was up and running again, but:
- the servers connected to EMC could not boot up at all.
- I wanted to connect to the EMC management gui via lan, but only ping was working, I could not access the gui via http. Neither SPA nor SPB.
- I have tried to power down and up again, nothing changed.
- There are no errors which would indicate any HW alarm by the leds (only exclamation mark is blue)
- I have also tried to connect to the service port with crosscable using the default settings, ping was working but no gui
- I also tried not only http:// , but also the setup page in each cases, it did not work also.
- When tried to use naviseccli the output was that management server is not running on EMC.
Any help would be great from you!
Thanks,
Balazs

it would need someone to connect to the serial port on each sp and run some commands to see why it goes into degraded mode - that's a support function and you'll need a CE on site - they have a procedure that they can use to recover from this state.
Best would be to open a case with EMC - they'll need to dispatch a CE to the site.
You can connect a terminal to the serial port (9600 baud) and capture the screen output - that will tell them where in the boot process the problem is. There's a old thread on this forum about using the serial port to capture the boot process.

This is not a unified unit with control station ? Proper procedure was used to power down and power up ?

on unified platform (NS-120, CX4-120 backend) you have control station and datamovers. So other then power down and power up nothing was changed ? You don't see SP WWNs logged-in to the switch ?

Hi,
2 SPS were switched off first, after the DAE shelves were powered down. I do not know about control station.
Thanks,

Are these servers configured for booting from SAN ?
Can you open the front bezel and see the LED status ?
Hope in chance, the cabling were not altered.

When you turned the power back on did you power up the DAE's first, the turn on the SPS?
When the SP's were starting up did you notice the flashing light boot sequence lights on each SP - they should flash for a while, then go steady. The steady state is usually an indication that the Management Server is up and running.
I would also suggest that you open a case with EMC - sort of sounds like the SP's are not booting all the way up.

Hello Team,
@dynamox: nothing was changed. And unfortunately I cannot see the WWN addresses in the brocade switches as well.
@Vipin V.K: yes they are configured to boot from SAN. The LED status looks fine for me, only the exclamation mark is blue, but there is nothing orange led. Although I have not tried to replace the cables, do you think it is possible that the cables went wrong after a power down-up?
@glen: as I remember yes, but also I have tried only to power down and then power up the SPSs only, while the DAEs were powered up continuously.
After power up the SPS, lights in the front start to blink orange, and after a while it become steady with blue.
Do you know if anything can be done via serial connection?
Thanks again,
Balazs

SP was Pingable but no GUI was available, your SP would boot into degrade mode. Did you check the fault LED blinking rate on the? What's the color, blue or amber?

Hi,
when I power it on, it starts blinking amber, after a while it becomes steady blue.
Thanks,

If it is so, what can be done with degrade mode?
Thanks,

Hi Glen,
thanks, I am going to check it. Do you know however is it possible to just reinstall the sw somehow? Or it can also be done only by EMC support?
Thanks,
Balázs

SP re-imaging (re-installing the FLARE OE) if necessary is done only by EMC support team. As glen suggested you can open an SR with the support and the team will give the action plan and will send a CE onsite.
