How to separate unused space from existing expanded LUN in Clarrion CX4-240 Unisphere
Hi All,
Recently we have expanded one Thin LUN from 2TB to 3 TB (additional 1 TB) which is presented to VMware ESX 4.1. Same LUN is converted to datastore (Filesystem:- VMFS3) mounted on Production server. Out of 3TB, 2TB production data is there. As we come to know that VMFS 3 is supporting maximum 2 TB therefore now our requirement is to separate 1TB (which we had expanded earlier) from 3TB expanded LUN WITHOUT LOSING THE PRODUCTION DATA.
Kindly Help..................:)

Hi Sabarna,
Once the LUN is been expanded, LUN cannot be separated or part of LUN cannot be deleted.

hopefully if you have extra space you can create another LUN and use storage vMotion to move vmdk around.

Thanks. I thought of storage migration but that is also not possible.

Hello Sabarna Deb,
I was thinking of VAAI Thin Provisioning Block Space Reclamation (UNMAP), but i have found that it was introduced in vSPhere 5.0; this feature was designed to efficiently reclaim deleted space to meet continuing storage needs.
- VAAI is not supported from VMware if used with CX-4 arrays; and VMware recommended disabling UNMAP on ESXi 5.0 hosts with thin-provisioned LUNs.
So, I believe that the other option will be the migration.
Thanks,
Shawky
