Frequent Drive failures

Hey folks ,

Need some insight into drive failures  , we are seeing an increased amount of failed drives on our CX3-80s over the last 6 months .

Anything I should be concerned about here ?

I know drive failures are inévitable and can occur due to head crash , bad sectors or internal circuits going bad . Is there anything that can be done proactively to reduce the amount of drive failures ?

regards

You have already answered your query. Adding to that every disk has a MBTF depending on which it fails over a period time to which there are other several factors which adds to frequent disk failures.

- High I/Os then a Physical Disk can handle.

- Soft Media Errors and Too many time outs

- Physical Defect [I am sure not your case but it happens sometimes]

What can you do?

1. Upgrade the FLARE to latest [if not already]

2. Update the Disk Enclosure and Disk Firmware if its just due to soft errors on the drive(s) which is causing this.

3. Take a Complete back up of the Data/LUNs

4. Recreate them and after that run a file system check to verify the consistency.

i suspect a lot of your drives are reaching some kind of internal threshold for errors and are being replaced pro-actively.

Yeah Flare code coule be one of the reasons ,  we are running a 26.080.5.031 . we should be on 03.26.080.5.032  been a long time since 5.032 was out . As we are in the process of migrating all our cx3-80s to a VNX8k  , that could be why the flare code was ignored  .
