FAST VP for Data Movers on CX4

I have 2 x NS4-120's.

CX4-120 at the backend and data movers up front.

Running FLARE 30 and DART 6.0

I used some disk for NAS and Data Mover access, and some for block IO out to hosts. Unified storage.

I know that i can license FAST VP and get some auto-tiering going on my array, but i want to use FAST on BOTH file and block data.

I read somewhere that with the CX4 backend i can only do FAST VP for block data.

Is this correct?

Is FAST VP for File only supported on VNX??

The NAS code in VNX (v.7.x) had to be modified in order to support the FASTVP pool on the back end. In DART 6 and previous, the NAS expects specific WWN, RAID info, etc from the LUNs on the backend in order to know how to build the storage pools for the NAS file systems. DART 6.x would not recognize the LUNs from a FASTVP pool correctly and the behavior would be inconsistent.

Hi,

Yes, FAST VP is supported for File level in VNX systems. In NS models, FAST VP works at block level.

Thanks for the reply but it does not answer the other part of my query.

I knwo the VNX supports FAST VP for File and Block.

I see that the CX4 supports FAST VP for Block.

Question

Does the CX4 support FAST VP for File also?

If the answer is no, does anyone know why?

It is the technology is different or that the CX4 is just deemed old and not support?

In my (simple) mind, it should work.

It's a FAST VP pool.

Create LUN's from it.

Present them to the Data Movers.

Create File Systems and Shares and off you go.

But - this

1) does not work?

2) does work but is not supported?

This is the answer.

I will revert to my EMC team and see if there are plans to do this for DART 6.0.

I am guessing i better not hold my breadth!!

Does the CX4 support FAST VP for File also? yes but with DART 7 onwards, On Dart code 6 File VP is  not supported.

Rel notes say that in the next releases like  (7.1) onwards will support  the  block pools with multiple RAID group types.
