EMC Global Hot Spare Configuration in Clarion AX-4

Hi,

We have EMC Clarion AX-4 DPE with 2 Disk Array Expansions. For the DPE, we have 12 disks, which are all bound to a RAID Group.

Below is the Configuration.

Disks 8,9,10,11 - RAID 1/0

Disks 4,5,6,7 - RAID 1/0

Disks 0,1,2,3 - RAID 5

Right now, EMC is not agreeing for a service contract as there is no global hot spare configured. Is there any way to configure one of the disks as global hot spare without affecting the data on the disks.

Your assistance is appreciated,

Thanks and Regards

No, there isn't.

I can say we have a workaround. (lengthy one)

Option 1:

Migrate LUNs from either Disks 8,9,10,11 - RAID 1/0 or Disks 4,5,6,7 - RAID 1/0 whichever has the very low sizes LUNs (I mean RAID Group is less utilized) and Free Disk Space is more. (if other RAID Group can actually take those LUNS) one of the RAID Group will be empty now. So destroy the RAID Group, create a Global Spare.

Do keep in mind you will no longer be able to create RAID 1/0 Configuration if you do this!

Reason: After configuring the Global Spare you will have only 3 Available Disk.

Option 2:

Buy a new enclosure with 12 Disks and with Expansion Enabler.

If you don't want to pay more money...Yes, I think migrating LUNs then destorying RG is the only way.

That option is dependent on whether or not he has sufficient space on other RAID Group to Perform LUN Migration!
