Drive Reuse SATAIII Clariion CX4

Is it possible to re-purpose/reuse a Hard Drive on a Clariion CX4-960 that was proactively replaced due to parity errors? I've since found there is a known fix for the drives that were replaced however still have the drives in my possession. The drives are SATAII 1TB drives. I want to know what will happen if I insert the drives into the Clariion on a DAE with free slots and the same drive types? It would be great if I can gain 4TB of drive space on drives that have a known fix. My question however is this possible?

Thank You for your time.

Once you create new RG/Pool and LUN across these drives, the data will get formatted and you can put new data in it.

May I ask what happens to the data that that existed on the drive? Does the data remain or does the Clariion do a format of the drive upon inserting the drives? Once, you bind a new RGRP and the LUNs...it will be over-written. (In a simpler term, "format"). However, as Vipin mentioned if you are using it on the same Storage Unit, it may cause you a problem. You were talking about a fix in your initial Question. Was it a FLARE Upgrade?! If yes, please be certain you have read the release notes and it clearly mentions that the FLARE upgrade has fixed the Soft Media Error issues on those FRU.

Are you going  to use them in the same array ?

You may check the FLARE OE matrices if you are putting them in a different system. In the same system, it is not going to be a problem.

But as the drives were proactively replaced, those might have had a lot of media errors and there will be a chance them failing soon. I would not recommend using them if you are planning to put them in same RAID Group as there will be a chance for multiple drive failures which may cause even Data Loss.

Yes, you may use the old disks in a new slot. However, if the disk had any Soft Media Errors (Bad Blocks) because of which it asked to be sparred then  I would not advise it.

If you have both CX3 and CX4, before swapping the old disks you should read the KB emc251613 "Swapping drives between CX3 and CX4 series arrays can result in data loss" first: https://support.emc.com/kb/73197

Just a though, you could create a single disk R0 raid group and create one LUN with MAX size and then run some tests on it before attempting to use it with other disks. If you have access to CLI you could run Background Verify (sniffer) on the riad group.
