CX500 with IBM P520 Server

Hello

Could someone please tell me how can I connect CX500 storage with IBM P520 directly?

I have two HBA cards installed in the server &  have assigned each one to the two vios as I am running virtualisation. What I want to do is assign the lpar clients to each vios for redundancy, which case I want the drives on CX500 asssigned to the vios for mapping to the lpar.

If possible steps would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Puneet

Thank you.

My problem is I connected CX500 directly to the server, then first turned on the CX500, then the server but the drives do not show up in my lspv list. It just shows the two internal server disks.

What am I doing wrong or missing.

no licensing needed for basic connectivity. This array is managed "out-of-band", meaning you need to assign IP address to storage processor A and storage processor B. Did the seller tell you that information ? If not you will need to search this forum on how to connect to service process with a serial cable, establish PPP session and assign it a valid IP address.

First I am trying to connect as jbod to see if my server can see the disks to make sure that cx500 is compatible with P520.

Later on I will be creating raids etc I guess with the help of navisphere software for windows & then attach each lv that I create to the lpar clients thru' vio.

What would be your advise.

Thanks again

Could you please send me the link for Navisphere software download for windows (I assume this is what you are talking) for connectivity status as I am new to EMC stuff.

Thanks

I suspect you will need to play with HBA topology (point to point or loop) to get it to login to array.

You are correct I got it from ebay item # 370928459555 (which you can search on ebay) to get complete details.

Is there any licensing too that is required.

no clue about IBM hardware. Where did you get this CX500 from, i am curious if you even have all the requirement compoents for this array to function. We've had way too many folks who buy a shelf of drives on Ebay and think they have the entire array.

I can do the basic serial connection to assign the ip addresss.

What would I have to do after IP is assigned?

typically CX500 came pre-installed with Accesslogix software that would allow you to "share" storage array with multiple hosts. There were Clariion arrays that used to be used as disk libraries, they did not have Accesslogix software installed because that array would be dedicated to one host only.  Let's assume you have a standard array that came with accesslogix installed, first step for you is to verify your host is properly logged-in to the array. If host is not logged-in to the array, you will not see any storage (regardless if it's running in "jbod" mode or you have created raid groups/LUNs). Can you connect to Navisphere and check Connectivity Status ?

Also, curious what I have is it says Dell EMC 1XE+. Is it CX500 and same as IBM DS4300 basically a SAN storage or is it just as expansion unit like IBM EXP710 or 810?

Thanks

are you trying to use CX500 as a jbod or you actually want to create raid groups, LUN ..etc ?

after you assign IP to SPA and SPB ..you will use your browser to connect to that IP and manage this array. Another issue might be that you don't have username and password for Navisphere but that can be reset as well using PPP connection.  If you search these forum for these keywords you will find a lot of hits.

To access the CX500, you open a browser (IE), point to the IP address for either SPA or SPB. This starts the Navisphere in the browser, no need for any additional software on you workstation, except for JAVA - be sure to use Java 1.5.28 and not 1.6 or 1.7 -  these are not supported on the CX500.

Somehow I cannot connect by PPP. I have all the steps but get error 777.

I have a 9 pinn both ends serial null modem cable. can I use this or do I have to use DB9 to RJ45 cable?

Thx
