CX4 Tiering Pools - Mixed RAID?
I have a question about mixing RAID types in thin pools with a CX4-240 w/ FAST and auto-tiering enabled. I have a raid group consisting of 6 200GB EFD's in RAID 5 that I would like to migrate to a thin pool. However, the Thin Pool I would like to use is setup as a RAID1/0. The pool has 4 300GB 15k FC, and 4 1TB SATA. Can I add these EFD's as a RAID 5? Or am I forced to use RAID1/0? I would prefer to use RAID 5 so I don't lose the EFD space which I have configured. Also, in regards to performance, this RAID group averages over 10k iops during a given day. Will migrating this to a thin pool impact performace greatly? Should I leave the LUNS configured for the highest tier? Or should I leave them alone? Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated!

Different RAID Type in a pool is support with Flare 32. Since the array is CX4 you cannot upgrade to Flare 32. Unfortunately you are stuck with having the same RAID Type in a pool and you cannot mix it.

If you want absolutely the best performance then RAID Groups is the way to go. If you compare a pool LUN versus a RAID Group LUN you can expect ~10% of a performance hit. That 10% might not matter if you are not fully utilizing the disks.

Thanks for the response. I guess I will have to shift some data around and recreate the pool. No big deal..any ideas on any performance hits from moving to a pool from a raid group? With tiering enabled?
Thanks!

Have you considered using the SSD's for FASTCache instead of making them part of the pool? Depending on your workloads, FASTCache may give you better bang for your buck on those SSD's compared to using them with FASTVP.
