CX4-120 EMC Defragmentation taking too long...

Hello,

I have an 11TB RAID array that got fragmented due to deleting some smaller LUNs in order to make space for a larger one. I kicked off a defrag to try to reclaim the contiguous space, but it is taking forever. First of all, the only indication of a status I could find is to look at the properties of the RAID array and view the "Additional State information". Secondly, it is at 47% defragmented and is completing about 1% per day. At this rate it will take about 53 more days to complete - and that is after I set it to High priority. Is this normal? Will it eventually speed up? I really need to reclaim this space to complete a job for the client. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

Raid Group defrag can be affected by other activity on the array. Check the LUNs in the raid group and make sure that these LUNs are not trespassing. Also, heavy use of the LUNs in the raid group will also affect the rate at which defrag works.

Depending on the disk type, defrag can take a long time to complete.

Thank you Glen. That is what I'm afraid of. It will have to run for several more weeks at this rate. It doesn't seem very efficient.
