Can an unused and not last one DAE be removed online?

Hi,

I need to remove online a DAE. But this is not the last one on the back-end loop.

This DAE is between the DPE and the last DAE.

We want to reuse this DAE with another AX4, which doesn't have enough disk.

It will be a great solution for us.

thanks in advance for anyone's help...

Below is a default backend AX4-5 Architecture.

AX4.JPG

Now, suppose ixion wants to remove the 2nd DAE. (i.e. Bus0 Enc2).

In order to do that it would be recommended to trespass all the LUNs for the side he would be removing the cable. (Lets say he is removing the backend cable from SP A) so he would need too trespass all the LUNs which is consisted of Bus0 Enc3 Dsk’s and Bus0 Enc4 Dsks to the Peer SP (i.e. SP B)

Once you disconnect a cable from only one side, the enclosure above it will show missing then if you connect the cable to the next enclosure, it will be just one missing from one side.

Now, he would need to connect that cable to backend port of Bus0 Enc3  and if no luns, it's OK. Repeat on the other side and all enclosures with LUNs are available again on both SPs.

Once, this activity is done. We need to stop the agent on both SPs at once to clear the fault. However, for R24 and greater we restart management server at same time which should clear the fault.

Pre-requisites: All LUNs and RAID Groups must be destroyed first. (Glen has also mentioned that)

Note: Enclosure 0-0 is the only one that this cannot be done on the fly.

[This works on AX and CX and CX3 and CX4.   This does not work on VNX back ends]

Sorry, I had replied to this post from a Cell Phone in the morning and this much detailed explanation was not possible with it!

Ankit, I think you missed to read it completely. That DAE is in the middle of the loop.

Yes, you can remove it. The DAEs are connected over 2 paths, so first you disconnect the first path and reconnect the next DAE to the previous DAE. Then you check if the remaining DAEs are 100% online again and then you repeat this for the 2nd path. Ankit was right all along

The disks in use are getting moved from Enclosure 2 to Enclosure 1 (address changes from enclosure2_driveX to enclosure1_driveX as enclosure 1 is being removed.) . I expect the storage system to behave abnormal here.

Won't they ?

DAE numbers will remain the same, so no disks will be renumbered! You’ll simply end up with (for example) DAE 0_0, 0_1 and 0_3 and 0_2 was removed.

Please rememeber to unbind and delete all raid groups/LUNs that use the DAE/disks that you'll be removing.

For more information about the AX4, you can go to the link below.

Hello,

What can I do if I removed the DAE and the disks and I didn't remove the LUNs?

I have this problem I've all the LUN in an "unmanged LUNs" folder and I can't remove them.

Thanks

Try rebooting both SPA and SPB and see if the cleans it up. If it does not, then open a case with EMC.
