Add another 4 FC Disks to RAID 5 Storage Pool ?

Hi,

We are using CX4-240 and already set up a Storage Pool with 10 FC Disks in a DAE.  In this way, we have already occupied 11 disk slots on the DAE (10 for RAID 5 Storage Pool and 1 for Hot Spare).

Since we are running out of space and we would like to add additional disks to the DAE.

From documentation, it says that the recommended pool size is multiple of FIVE for RAID 5.  What is the best option for those newly added 4 FC disks - Expand the Storage Pool ?  Create a RAID Group ?

Thanks

Hi,

Yes, it's recommended to expand the pool in multiple of 5 drives for R5 Pool (4+1).

If possible, unbind the hotspare and configure on other enclosure and use the 5 drives from same enclosure.

Hotspares are global and can kick in for any faulted drive on array meeting certain criterias like disk size, type etc.

Refer to https://www.emc.com/collateral/software/white-papers/h10938-vnx-best-practices-wp.pdf

When expanding pools, use a multiple of the preferred modulus drive count for the tier you are expanding

  • Anything other than preferred modulus results in non-standard private RAID Groups that can be less than optimal for balanced performance.
    • For example: 10 drives in a RAID 1/0 configuration, where the preferred modulus is 8, results in a 1+1 mirror that can lead to a hot spot within the tier.
