Single instance

Hello,

Our Centera is in capacity mode, so the Centera will deduplicate the files.

I want to know what the used space will be in a specific pool without deduplication. What is the effectiveness of single instancing?

It looks like i have to calculate it, but how do i do this?

Many thanks.

Hello

There is a unique signature is used to guarantee the storage of only a single instance of an object. This signature is derived from the binary representation of the object. At write time, the CAS system is polled to see if it already has an object with the same signature. If the object is already on the system, it is not stored, rather only a pointer to that object is created. SiS simplifies storage resource management tasks, especially when handling hundreds of terabytes of fixed content. To calculate and perform the task, I suggest you create a ticket with support.

Regards,

Phukon

There are two types of reporting in Centera. Pool capacity reporting and cluster capacity reporting.

Pool capacity reporting shows the total size of all clips in the pool added together. This would be the amount of capacity needed if you were to read back everything in the pool to secondary storage. This does not take into account single instancing of data etc. Because of this, pool capacity reporting can show used capacity in excess of the total raw capacity of the entire Centera.

Cluster capacity is the actual capacity used on the Centera. This is a true representation of what is used or available on the cluster and does account for single instancing etc.

Use the health reports and look at the appropriate section at the bottom of the health report (Pool Capacity or Cluster Capacity)

You could also use Centera Viewer CLI "show pool capacity" to see pool capacity reporting, or "show capacity total", "show capacity avail" to view cluster usage.
