Centera Tape Out
Can anyone advise on whether the Centera supports tape-out.
Can the stored data be sent from the Centera directly to tape or would you have to recall the data first to the application and use a backup application to back it up to tape.

Hi SteveO -
It depends on whether you are trying to back up the Centera objects, or the application data itself. If you use a 3rd party tool to write the Centera objects directly to tape, you'll have a tape full of data that must be restored to a Centera to be able to read through the app. If you back up through the application, you will have application-format files that can be used on other storage media.
My company offers a high-speed CAS -> NAS migration service that would let us copy your application data (in application file format) directly out of Centera to any CIFS/NFS capable target. You can find out more at www.interlock-tech.com.

The Centera when configured with replication does not require back up to tape.
If a customer requires this then we would recommend Seven10's Altus can be used to backup their Centera

It really depends on what Centera application(s) you are talking about. If it is a filesystem gateway (DX, CUA, CTA, Arkivio etc) and you have enough capacity on the source volume for the recalls, then yes it's straightforward (if slow and error-prone) to do a file-level backup to tape or other media.
If it's an application that writes directly to the Centera API (NICE, EV, FileNet, Documentum and about 275 others) then you have to use whatever host tools are provided with the application to export your data. Generally these tools are slow when extracting from Centera (some are ridiculously slow) but they may be able get the job done. Of course you won't generally get chain of custody documentation and all the other niceties (including peace of mind) that come with our service
Good Luck with whatever path you decide to pursue.

Thanks Mike
So the intent would be to backup the application data and not the Centera objects.
And in fact we are currently in discussions with Interlock.
Aside from Interlock I just wanted to understand other options for future reference and especially in the case where the data stored is relatively small. Could you simply recall the objects back to original state, backup using your backup app off to tape.Considering now that we have LTO-6 and 4TB drives could it be a valid option. I guess it also depends on the litigation requirements.
