Centera GEN4-node
Hi All,
What we need is to backup the Archived date stored on Centera, currently only replication is enabled between two centera's.
We have Symantec Netbackup 6.5 as our Backup solution and Enterprise Vault for Archiving solution, kindly let us know how we can backup the archived data and whether Symantec Netbackup can be used to achieve this?
regards,
Samir

There are two possibilities that I can offer to you.
The first method to backup a Centera would be to use the EMC|Legato Centera Backup and Recovery Module to backup your systems. CBRM provides a NDMP connector that Netbackup could use. You might need a CBRM license on the Netbackup side too.
CBRM offers level 0 and level 1 backup. 0 being a full backup and 1 incremental.
The NDMP backup does not seem to be a suitable method for systems with lot's of small objects stored on them. With your EV this should not be the case if you use collections.
If you do not have the obligation to store your Centera content on a second media type, I suggest you look at DelayedDeletes that Informatio (my company) offers. DelayedDeletes is based on a configurable delay with which delete requests are replicated between Centera systems (no longer using the Centera replication to replicate the delete request). During the configured delay a copy of your deleted objects remain on the target Centera system (mirrored or parity protected an this probably safer than on a tape). With ClipRecovery you can restore a deleted object from the target to the source system when there is a need to recover deleted information.
DelayedDeletes is offered on a per customer base and is not dependent on the size of your systems. If you need more than two different delays you need to use DelayedDeletes Plus.
Both solutions with CBRM and DelayedDeletes are only looking at the Centera systems. With an application like EV that has a SQL Database where object ID's are stored a recovery if a clip might only be half of the solution. You need to get back the object in a EV understandable way (which could mean to restore a EV Database into a different DB and then try to figure out what is needed to perform a single file restore). This lead us to the development of AdvancedRecovery for DelayedDeletes.
We are in the testing phase of AdvancedRecovery for DelayedDeletes. AdvancedRecovery would provide a searchable database of all objects that are currently protected and recoverably thanks to DelayedDeletes. AdvancedRecovery would not restore the object to the source Centera but provide the possibility to store the object in a filesystem. This way the file can be stored in the filesystem the user want's it. EV (with FSA for instance) would then treat the recovered file as a new file in the filesystem and that's it. Once it's old enough it will be archived again.
There are different possibilitites to ensure recoverability of your archive infrastructure. DelayedDeletes with AdvancedRecovery are our answer to this question.
Do not hesitate to contact me using holger.jakob@informatio.ch. We will be at EMC World in case you attend too. Booth 216.
Best regards, Holger

You're welcome. At Informatio we're passionate about Centera and are always trying to figure out solutions that help everyone with a quite common need.
Next thing potentially ready at EMC World will be ApplicationAudit allowing to answer questions like which objects were written by an application. More important ApplicationAudit will also be able to answer the question which objects were deleted by an application. Both limited by application and timeframe.
Please mark the question as anwered so that the people do not always stumble across the unanswered threads.
Best regards, Holger
