Centera failover testing
I have a client that has a Centera box in production then this box writes to another Centera box in a DR Site. They would like to know how to test the backup server and what issues there would be to doing this. They are currently using these Centera boxes to store ApplicationXtender data.
Has anyone done this type of DR testing with Centera boxes?
Thanks
Russ

You can change the connection string used by the application to change the IP addess from the production Centera to the DR Centera.
If any writes will be performed during this test, ensure that bi-directional replication is enabled so that the clusters remain in sync

Hi
If you want to test the read failover you can issue a set grants command and remove the read capability. This would then get ApplicationXtender to read from the secondary. If you remove all capabilities you would test DR.
Keep in mind the bi-directional replication that Dennis mentioned if you do not want to perform a restore in order to re-establish DR capalities for all your data.

Hello Holger,
Very good info on this topic... much appreciated,
If a site already has uni-directional replication of a pool functioning properly, looking for the best way to add in bi-directional.
Is Bi-directional setup using the same Pools currently configured for Uni-directional? But in the opposite direction?
Just want to confirm if the same pools are to be used for the configuration.
Thanks,

Hi Dave
Absolutely, the target would replicate the same pools as the source Centera.
Connect to the source system and create a replication profile with dec capability on the pool that are replicated. Then connect to the secondary, configure replication and use the non-combined .pea you created on the source.
We manage about 40 systems for different customers and typically use bi-directional replication to avoid manual tasks in case of failover and failback being needed. Less tasks in this situation are what we aim for :-)
Best regards, Holger

We have a site that does READ ONLY DR testing on the Target site. Here are the steps.
Source site:
1-Source site, pause replication
Target site:
2-Create a small VLAN and move Centera Access node cables (on the switch end) to the new switch. The customer had the switches next to each other.
3-Record the Access node IP information ( CLI "show IP detail" ) Change the IP addresses on the target Centera for the new network.
4-Have the customer's application access this new VLAN and test READ ONLY actions.
Just reverse the process to restore the environment.
