Application Integration Options for Centera @ EMC World 2010 - Boston 10-13 May

At this years EMC World in Boston I will be presenting on what the options are for Application Developers who are planning to integrate their application to the Centera.

The areas that I will be covering will be the Centera API, XAM API, Remote Blob Store interface for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and the Centera's CIFS/NFS file system interface.

I'm designing the session so that application developers who attend can understand which interface method is most appropriate to meet your requirements and to the skill set available in your teams.

As I'm at the starting point in designing the session I would appreciate any comments or suggestions you may have for content.  I'll be tracking this discussion thread so I'm looking forward to reading your suggestions!

If you are a windows .NET developer you may be interested to know that Graham Stuart has developed very comprehensive .NET wrappers for both the Centera SDK and the XAM SDK.  These make developing an integration to the Centera or XAM SDKs much easier.

The Centera .NET wrapper is available at

http://sourceforge.net/projects/cosi-dot-net/

and the XAM wrapper is at

http://xamsdk.codeplex.com/

both are full object oriented .NET layers so they should be very useful to all .NET developers!

Just a reminder that I'm looking for input on any areas that you would like me to discuss or highlight during my presentation.

Are there any integration options that are of particular interest to the community?

One thing I would be interested in is (if possible) a "live" demo of the different methods you mentioned below to write to Centera.

The best way to "demo" each of these methods is to review the sample code which come with each of the SDKs, the .NET and Microsoft RBS.  Gaining an understanding of how the sample code does what it does is a great first step to understanding each of the APIs.

Unfortunetly the time allocated for the presentation and the breadth of the topics means that I can't actually do any review of the code beyond the simple illustrations I have of each in my presentation.

As an intro to the Remote Blob Storage portion of my presentation and something to intrigue you have a look at this slide

this functional diagram of the main components of RBS showing the flow of data and control

I look forward to seeing you at EMC World!

Hi Paul,

Seven10 Storage Software was one of the 10 original companies to be in the Centera Partner Program. We've developed a technology called StorFirst EAS (recently admitted into EMC Select) that acts as a CIFS/NFS/HTTP file system gateway to the Centera API. We also support XAM.

Some pretty cool features:

- Allows multiple applications to tie into Centera, removing that 1-to-1, application to Centera ratio that can result in fork-lift upgrades down the road.

- Takes care of all Centera API integration, so the application provider doesn't have to be in the storage industry! They don't want to waste their time        engineering to an API. They want to be enter customer environments, knowing they can already support Centera with no trouble.

- Makes it possible for EMC customers to archive to Centera AND a combination of up to three tiers of Atmos, CLARiiON, Symmetrix, or Celerra.

Shoot me a note if you're interested in a slide or some notes for your presentation, Paul.

Oops, I read Grahams post first, and replied.  Some of my comments on his are probably more appropriate here.  Sorry.  I'll add somthing different here - that if I were making the choice that I'd be interested in.

  • Complexity
  • Performance
  • Security
  • Programmatic interfaces
  • Maturity
  • Capabilities
  • Limitations
  • Advantages
  • Open vs closed
  • Vendor commitment levels
  • User direction
  • Industry acceptance
  • Black&White vs grey issues.  I.e. if non-binding metadata is req'd then only one option.
  • Crystal ball predictions for the future

And since I gave Graham the idea for the song, I'll pass the lyrics onto you.  Sorry, I don't have a song for CenteraAPI coding...

Ooh, yeah! All right!
We're xammin':
I wanna xam it wid you.
We're xammin', xammin',
And I hope you like xammin', too.

Ain't no rules, ain't no vow, we can do it anyhow:
I'n'I will see you through,
'Cos everyday we pay the price with a little sacrifice,
xammin' till the xam is through.

We're xammin' -
To think that xammin' was a thing of the past;
We're xammin',
And I hope this xam is gonna last.

No bullet can stop us now, we neither beg nor we won't bow;
Neither can be bought nor sold.
We all defend the right; Jah - Jah children must unite:
Your life is worth much more than gold.

We're xammin' (xammin', xammin', xammin')
And we're xammin' in the name of the Lord;
We're xammin' (xammin', xammin', xammin'),
We're xammin' right straight from Yah.

Yeh! Holy Mount Zion;
Holy Mount Zion:
Jah sitteth in Mount Zion
And rules all creation.

Yeah, we're - we're xammin' (wotcha-wa),
Wotcha-wa-wa-wa, we're xammin' (wotcha-wa),
See, I wanna xam it wid you
We're xammin' (xammin', xammin', xammin')
I'm xammed: I hope you're xammin', too.

xam's about my pride and truth I cannot hide
To keep you satisfied.
True love that now exist is the love I can't resist,
So xam by my side.

We're xammin' (xammin', xammin', xammin'), yeah-eah-eah!
I wanna xam it wid you.
We're xammin', we're xammin', we're xammin', we're xammin',
We're xammin', we're xammin', we're xammin', we're xammin';
Hope you like xammin', too.
We're xammin', we're xammin' (xammin'),
We're xammin', we're xammin' (xammin').
I wanna (I wanna xam it wid you) - I wanna -
I wanna xam wid you now.
xammin', xammin' (hope you like xammin' too).
Eh-eh! I hope you like xammin', I hope you like xammin',
'Cause (I wanna xam it wid you). I wanna ... wid you.
I like - I hope you - I hope you like xammin', too.
I wanna xam it;
I wanna xam it.
