Use of Aux 1 Port in Celerra NX4 for NDMP?
Hi all.
I'm currently trying to configure NDMP on a Celerra NX4.
As far as i got from the NDMP documentation i have to shut down the Data Mover, attach the Tape Drives or Library and power it up again.
(Reboot only doesn't seem to do it).
Now this customer only has one Data Mover and wants some kind of redundancy, so he zoned me two cables for it (2 Tape Drives coming in on each), as there are two Aux ports.
So here's the question:
Only one port comes with a SFP (Aux 0). Can i only use this one or can i also use Aux 1 if i have a second SFP?
I cannot find ANY information on this in any part of the documentation.
Maybe you can help me with a short answer or even point me to a document where to find this information.
Regards
Alex

Alex,
rebooting datamover should be your last resort, try this command first:
.server_config server_x -v "fcp portreset=2"
.server_config server_x -v "fcp portreset=3"
where 2 and 3 are your aux ports , make sure that's them
.server_config server_2 -v "fcp show"

Thanks for your fast answer, i'll try that tomorrow!!
Maybe another short question afterwards: to make the tapes visible for the first time it's really necessary to shut down the data mover?
I tried today but without shut down, only reboot and all those server_devconfig commands without success...

You can use both ports.
Just get missing sfp from your local EMC dude. Putting another sfp doesn't even need reboot. Just plug it in. Put the cables, zone it and run server_devconfig something (can't remember but it's in the document), We have two celerras with aux0 and aux1 configured. No tape drives in spare datamovers but I can live with that.

You don't have to shut it down. Reboot is enough.
The way I did it (as far as I can remember).
Put the fc cable to aux0. Remember the switch port where you connect the aux0.
Reboot dm. Failover/failback should be enough.
Check that the light is on on aux0. Zone it correctly to tape drives.
Put aux1 sfp. Put the fc cable (light should go on). Zone it correctly to tape drives.
Run server_devconfig stuff (probe and save???). Remember the adresses.
On backup server you have to reconfigure something so you can use ndmp tape drives. Don't know much about that 'cause it was done by our backup dude.
VBB with ndmp tape drives work really well. There's parallelism in ndmp tape drives but you don't need it. Especially level backups are really fast. For example one archived fs, 6 million files, 1,1tb. Level backups are 10-20 minutes. Used to be 1-3hours.
Just keep in mind that you can't do file level restores from deduped filesystems with vbb.

if you order and install the second SFP then you can use AUX1 as well

AFAIK you don't have to shutdown - reboot should be enough
