NX4 5.6.49 - steps to enable and test NDMP with CA Brightstor 12

i want to enable this protocol to do backups,

do i need to use only the gui to enable it, or i need to issue some cli commands?

if i need to telnet the protocol, to the tcp port 10000, why i get garbage in the telnet response.

thks

see the Celerra NDMP Manual available from Powerlink

you Do need the CLI at least once to create the NDMP account and password

because that port is for ndmp and not for telnet. Telnet to a port is an easy way to verify that host is accepting connections on that port.

i have cge0 configure in the datamover server_2  with 1 ip address, connected

i have cge1 configure in the datamover server_2  a other 1 ip address, too connected

when i made the vtlu, from my software how do get the NDMP protocol connection,

do i need to insert NDMP service on my windows backup server?

from my software

i already have license for NDMP protocol on my software,

but what i need to choose when adding devices?

tape/optical Library

Raid device

Virtual library

file system Device

enable/disable devices (for RSM)

if i choose virtual library, there is no option to insert an ip address, (datamover)

and what ip need to use, cge0 or cge1

thanks

Did you read the Celerra NDMP manual ?

It contains a section on how to configure CA Brightstor.

It also depends on what you backup device is and where it is connected

are you trying to backup to a device connected to your backup server?

in order to do that your backup software would have to have a NDMP tape server implemented and be supported by EMC for heterogenous 3-way NDMP

I can't find CA BrightStor in the support matrix for that feature

are you trying to backup to a NDMP VTLU created on the Celerra data mover ??

that should work and not conflict with any tape drives on the backup server

I would really suggest to use the two Celerra NDMP manuals and the CA documentation

the Celerra NDMP VTLU manual will tell you how to identify the devices

I dont think CA can auto-configure them - I assume you have to manually enter the device names there

Its really not that special - for the backup application it looks like NDMP backup to a FC tape drive thats locally attached to the data mover or via 3-way NDMP if its on a different data mover

I dont have phisical device conected to the datamover, what i want to do

is to use the VTLU option, i already create the user in the datamover

install the nas option from the software,

but the backup server is a windows 2003 server, with an hp tape library, phisically conected to it

does the vtlu can conflict de default id with the tape, how to check this

any idea

you can use the NDMP VTLU to backup Celerra file system like you would with a real tape library

you normally can't use it to backup non-NDMP data

it's not a replication - you can't access the backed up file directly - like with a real TLU you have to use a NDMP restore

The Celerra manuals contain a concepts section that explains the various options nicely with pictures making them clearer

Rainer

just to confirm, can you please tell with your words, exactly what can i do with VTLU

can i backup my nas filesystem to other filesystem, in the same nas.

via an interface of a phisical datamover

thats the idea that i have.

thanks

ok thanks

one thing more, the backup aplication is on a windows 2003 server, with a phisical tape backup unit conected to it. (hp LTO ultrium 2-scsi,scsi target id:5)

if i create a vtlu the aplication gets slow, then respond, and the phisical tape gets and conection error, and is not

responding. any idea.

in the datamover events i have following error many times

MoveMedium: INTERNAL_TARGET_FAILURE
MoveMedium: INTERNAL_TARGET_FAILURE
UpdateDeviceLock() -->Read() SVTL_STATUS_KEY_NOT_FOUND
CRboDrv::createDevice Device [c3t0l3]not created: This is not a robot
CStrDrv::createDevice Device [c3t0l3]not created: This is not a streamer
Session 091 (thread ndmp091 fails in tape open, err=16, drive, mode=NDMP_TAPE_READ_MODE, fileName=../NdmpdTape.cxx, lineNo=126.
Thread ndmp091 fails in scsi_createdevice, controller=$3, tid=0, lun=3, stat=-1.
