NS120 - Added some new drives - need advice on sizing
Hello everyone,
this is the situation: a happy running ns120 with Unisphere, the system is basically servicing a Vmware infrastructur through iScsi using VMFS, no particular requirements. I have added some new drives and the drives are recognized from the system and marked as "unused".
Pretty much we are talking about 6 SATA (total capacity about 3.5 TB in RAID5) drives and 6 SAS (Total Capacity about 2.5 TB in RAID5) drives.
I was thinking of:
- create 1 Storage pool in RAID 5 (all 6 SATA drives) with no hot spare (there is already an hot spare in the system)
- create 1 Storage pool in RAID 5 (all 6 SAS drives) with no hot spare (there is already an hot spare in the system).
- create 3x1TB LUNS out of the SATA pool and leave 500GB in the pool unassigned to expand the single LUNs if needed in the future.
- create 2x1TB LUNS out of the SAS pool and leave 500GB in the pool unassigned to expand the single LUNs if needed in the future.
My question sare:
- is my sizing correct (storage pools and LUNs size considering that will serve VMware thorugh iSCSI).
- do the hot spares will cover the ENTIRE system or just the pool previosly configured. I mean, the hot spares configured in another storage pool will kick in if a fail drive occurs in this storage pool or not.
- will these operations have any impact on the live enviroment or not.
thanks

are you using iSCSI through the datamovers ? You can present new LUNs and configure them as datastores online.
You are correct, hot spares are global.
