NIC upgrade on NX480

Hello Folks,

We are upgrading NS-480 1Gig NIC cards to 10gig NIC cards and also we are moving it to a different RAC location in DC. I need help to know the prerequisites that should be taken care before we do the movement and NIC upgrade.

Current configuration is FSN0 ( trk1(cge1,cge2),cge3) on server_2 , FSN0 ( trk1(cge1,cge2),cge3) on server_4 and FSN0 ( trk1(cge1,cge2),cge3) on server_5.

If IP address of each devices is getting changed, we would have to reconfigure complete Network setup accordingly.

10G devices will be different, you will need to reconfigure your FSN/trunks

Ok..let me do a little research on devices name of 10G NIC cards and create the command script for new FSN/trnk before I actually execute on NS-480...

Also, could you share me EMC doc link talking about 10G NIC card configuration.

there is nothing special about 10G NICs, same trunk/FSN configuration you have done with cge devices. I have optical 10G devices in my VNX and they are named "fxg-1-1"

10G NICs will be listed as different device names, yes you will need to delete all interfaces and re-create them once the new devices are configured. I would actually do it before you yank them out so not to leave any "ghost" entries.

Thank you for replying to my post.

Do you mean just the speed on FSN/Trunks or complete configuration ( devices and interfaces ) ?

Also do we need to delete interfaces and create new interfaces ?

Thanks Dynamox , Below would be the plan before replacing 1G with 10G.

1. Create trunk and FSN for 10G cards.

2. Create Interface using 10G FSN and ethernet port.

After replacement .

1. Delete 1G devices and interfaces.

2. Add interfaces to CIFS setup and rejoin into AD.

Correct me, if I am wrong in any of these steps.

reverse the order, delete interfaces, delete FSN/trunk on cge devices.  Remove 1G NICs, install 10G NiCs, configure trunks/FSN, create interfaces.

Thanks Dynamox , I will reverse the order.

I have a critical query regarding interfaces deletion on NS-480.

Each CIFS server will be binded to one interface, Will I be able to delete an interface which is binded to a CIFS server.

Do I need to uncheck that interface on CIFS server "Properties" and perform interface deletion  ?

Is there any other way to perform this ?

Dynamox,

I unchecked the active interface used CIFS server and then tried deleting that interface. I got the below error message.

" One of the interface names of an interconnect cannot be resolved by DNS "

I am able to ping that IP, "nslookup" doesn't return CIFS server name. I think DNS entries should be created, Can you give your suggestion on this ?

is that interface used by replication ?

nas_cel -interconnect -list

then

nas_cel -interconnect -info

i don't remember at what code level EMC added that capability where you could simply uncheck the interface from the CIFS servers, re-create that interfaces (IP change or whatever) and re-assign it back. Validate that your NS480 before the actual migration date. You can create a dummy interface with a fake IP address, create a dummy CIFS and go through the steps you will be doing on the migration date to validate that you can do that on your code level.

Ok buddy, I will check and get back to you.

"Delete" option is greyed  out when I try to delete replication interface. I am not sure what could be the problem, but I click CIFS interface it shows up..

It is not a "interconnect" interface, this separate. I also have to delete interconnect interface also.
