NDMP does not backup
Hello,
We are working on getting NDMP to work on our production backup server. the backup server (both test and production) runs CA BrightStor v12.5 with dynamic device sharing on.
Our test server successfully does ndmp backups (this would mean the nas is configured correctly - would you agree?).
our production server does not backup by ndmp successfully.
the test server does not have any fiber switch zoning to it. our production server has zoning to a clariion for storage. it also has a zone in the fiber switch from the production server to the tapes in the tape library unit.
We get the scsi reservation error message when looking at the nas logs.
i am looking for feedback if the zoning to the tlu is needed? or any other thoughts.
(due to backups running, we can only test this when the backup environment is idle every few weeks)
Thanks in advance.

you can zone tape library to aux ports on the datamovers and perform traditional NDMP backups or you can perform NDMP backup over IP, referred to as 3-way NDMP. Which one are you trying to accomplish ?

Hi,
We are direct attached with the aux port. tests from the celerra nas to the tlu with ndmp was successful.
tests from our test backup server with ndmp was successful.
when we try to use the production backup server, it fails, we see the drive but when the format command runs the backup software hangs. the logs show an scsi reservation error. when reviewing our zoning on the fiber switch, i noticed that the tlu was zoned to the backup server also. i am questioning if this zone is needed.
thanks in advance.

That is a param whether or not the datamover does SCSI reservation for tape drives – see if changing that helps.
In general you should only have one host controlling the TLU (robotics) – any good backup software can do this with library sharing

Hi,
Sorry for the delay. the parameter is set correctly on the nas.
i am focusing more on the zoning of the production backup server (the test backup server does ndmp backups without an issue and it is not zoned to the tlu).
my production backup server does have a fiber switch zone to the tlu - is that needed and causing the issue.
i guess i would need to verify how that department backs up the data (the data transfer over ethernet or fiber or both).
would that be a correct statement? the CA software settings were verified by the vendor.
what is your zoning for NDMP of the backup software server and the tlu?
thanks.

Which same issue ?
The original poster hasn’t replied in almost a year what his problem actually was.
