multiple cifs servers with different domain and DNS in Celerra

Hello All,

*

In our environment, we already have CIFS server configured with primary Data Mover (Server_2). Now there is a new request from Customer to create another CIFS server, join to different domain with different DNS settings. Means, new domain controller using different DNS entries.

I am going to follow below steps.

Create a new VDM.

Create a new Virtual interface from existing devices.

Create a new CIFS server and add to new VDM and new interface.

Create a new DNS settings as per new domain requirement and add with new VDM.

Create a new share, pointing to new CIFS server and test.

Please let me know if any of the settings I am missing.

Sounds roughly ok

For exact steps please take a look at the manuals for CIFS and VDM

Thanks Rainer,

In our VNX, DNS is already configured for existing Cifs server? Now after creating a new CIFS server in new VDM,  how the new DNS server will point to the CIFS server (Via newly created VDM which was selected while creating a new DNS domain)?

Also, I am preparing for new filesystem creation but our current File storage pool is full and extend option is grayed out. (Extend option is  not active).

Thanks

If you are server_ping your new AD you should be ok

If not you need to add to the DNS config

Thanks for reply.

I tried to create a new CIFS server, but while joining a domain, its giving below error.

"Join Failed. System was unable to join or has already joined the CIFS server to the Domain. Go to the server log for more details" Message ID -: 17986748527

In CIFS server tab, I can able to see the newly created CISF server joined to the domain but not accessible from network.

Below are the steps I followed.

1, Created New interface with same IP range as my primary CISF server.

2, Created new VDM

3, Created new CIFS server with new VDM and assigned the new interface IP. (While joining to Domain got with above message)

4, created a new cifs share and map with new CIFS server.

Still I am not able to see the CIFS server in the network.

I am able to ping the new IP from Celerra.

Hi Rainer,

Thanks, I will verify.

In CIFS document, its mentioned that "It is recommended that you always explicitly associate network interfaces with that first CIFS server created on the Data mover. This Practice makes it easier to create more network interfaces in the future and avoids having CIFS traffic flow onto networks for which it is not intended. The default CIFS server cannot be created on a Data mover having a loaded Virtual data Mover (VDM)"

I am not able to understand the above lines. Does it discourage using VDM?

As it says you need to check the data mover log using server_log and see what the error is when joining

There should also be a knowledgebase article on support.emc.com about troubleshooting domain join

No – it just means that when using VDM’s you shouldn’t use the old way of creating a CIFS server with no interfaces specified (default CIFS server)

That is something from the pre-VDM days but was kept in the code for customers using older versions and no VDMs
