Migrating User quotas
Hi Gurus,
We are in process of migrating windows File server to EMC VNX NAS environment using EMCopy tool. as far as the data copy and copying the permissions is concerned EMCopy will take care of it. but we have user quotas configured in the present environment and want the same to be copied or configured in the VNX after migration...the issue is that we have around 2500 users with most of them having different quota settings...so since EMCopy will not take care of the quotas is there any tool or method which can help us to configure/copy these quotas on the VNX smoothly...else we need to do the quota settings individually for each of the 2500 users which is a big tasks :-(.
your answers will be appreciated.

Hi AMB123,
Since you have about 2500 quota settings for different users in the present environment, I believe the daily management of quota is very complicated. why do you use the default quota setting in the VNX instead of present quota settings in the windows file server? Perhaps you can set a default quota parameter for major users, and then give the different quota setting for VIP users. It will reduce your workload for setting user quota.

Hi Jeffery,
Using the default quota setting for the user and then adding exceptions for the specific users is an option but before going to that option I was just thinking curiously if there is any way out wherein we can copy/migrate the quotas into the new setup...even if we have to use any 3rd part tool...

Hi AMB123,
The EMCopy can migrate "data" and "NT Attributes" from an existing NT server to the CIFS server, while retaining as many original ACL and ACE directory/file entries, including file "ownership" permission, as possible. However, the customer have to recreate Quotas after the migration. I have looked for many documents, but I didn't find any 3rd part tool support to migrate quota setting on the VNX.

You could also create quota classes through templates and then just assign users to classes.
Another options I have seen at customers to create different treequota’s with different default quotas.
Then you just migrate the user into the treequota that matches his quota.
