How can I know the serial number associated with the path to add them manually

I 've this problem configuring netbackup to celerra with NDMP.

I went through the Netbackup document and it states
"NetBackup only sees the path and serial number presented to it during  the discovery path. If the path or the serial numbers are incorrect,  they are being received by NetBackup during the discovery process  incorrectly."

I guess , this is what is happening in my case.

I can manually add paths to NetBackup if I know the serial number  associated with the path. If I  can find this information, I can assist the backup guy  with editing the paths based on the information.

Is there a way i can find the serial number associated with the path?

Scsi id of the tape drives from celerra

tape1 c224t0l0 tape IBM ULT3580-TD4 A232
ttttape1 c64t0l0 tape IBM ULT3580-TD4 A239
ttape1 c80t0l0 tape IBM ULT3580-TD4 A232
tttape1 c240t0l0 tape IBM ULT3580-TD4 A232

The scsi id what netbackup is enquiring for. error i collected from server_log

2011-01-31 08:47:54: STORAGE: 3: c192t0l0: SCSICFG->Inquiry command failed

that is the reason i 'm looking for a way to find the serial number associated with the paths.

Please please help me troubleshoot this:

We run NBU 7.0 in our environment, and I've setup four Celerra now, a mix of tape robots.  I've never used the serial number in the process.  You can add the path without knowing the serial number using set_ndmp_attr on NBU 6.5 and earlier.

From the command line on the NBU master servr, you can run set_ndmp_attr -insert -robot server_2
controller>
which will configure a tape robot in the device manager.

Once you've got the paths in the device manager, you should be set, from what I've seen.  Will that help?

No worries, deeppat -

We, too are using Dynamic Drive Sharing on NBU - we could not get things working with scsiReserve set to "1"; it has to be set to "0", as you've figured out.

Sure, you can failover from server_2 to the standby (server_standby server_2 -activate mover), then you'll have to restore the standby relationship (server_standby server_2 -restore mover) to reboot the DMs and return to the active-standby relationship.  This process will reboot the datamovers, which is what you're after.

It's up you want to do - I would just reboot server_2 with server_cpu -reboot warm -monitor now.  A warm reboot is much faster than failing over and failing back.  If you have a long outage window, there's no reason you can do a failover and failback.  In either case, a reboot or failover should not put your data in jeopardy.  That's why we pay EMC so much $$$, right?

Hi Karl,

appologies for not getting back soon on this. The symantec guy had done the configuration exactly the same way you had mentioned. The problem  is  with ScsiReserve( some how managed to confirm  from a EMC support guy )

We 're using Dynamic Disk sharing and the scsiReserve default value is set to 1 in DM. But. i need to have it set to "0" to disable scsiReservation.

This needs blade reboot , and calls for an outage. So i am in the process of scheduling an outage window to carry this out.

One more thing, can i go for fail over instead of Rebooting the DM. What would be the safest thing to do?

say, if server_2 is running on slot_2 and slot_3 is the standby one -  failing over server_2 so that it now runs on slot_3 and slot 2 gets  rebooted, and vice versa.

Which would be the best way?

I want to make sure i don't make a boo boo..we have very imp cutomer data residing .
