HELP : VG8 configuration
Current configuration
Site1
VG8 with two Datamovers
Connected to VMAX 40k
Replicating to (SRDF)
Site2
VG8 with two Datamover
Connected to VMAX 40K
questions
1. Can we provision NFS locally? No replicating to Site2? The way I understand it is in order to do that we need a second set of VG8 and confiure it as local only. The current DM needs to have all LUNs replicating.
2. We need to clone the VMAXvols provisioned to the VG8. Does it need to be the same Emulation? The current emulation of the VG8 symmetrix volumes is CELERRA. The Clones needs to have emulation of FBA as they will be presented to media servers
Thanks in advance

All storage on one data mover has to be either mirrored or not
If you get another data mover (VG8 supports up to eight) you can set that up as “unprotected” and use that for file systems that aren’t mirrored (on extra LUNs).
For the second question I don’t know what you mean.

Hi Rainer,
Thanks for responding.
Regarding the second question. Basically they want to clone the LUNs provisioned to the VG8 (where the NFS FS reside) and present that into a media server (networker)

I've got a another situation.... My project needs a lot of storage capacity and we cannot accomodate that in the exisitng VMAX frame. We are planning to provide a small/initial capacity of NFS shares to the project for them to start the build while we wait for the new Datamover to be installed in the exisitng VG8 frame. the new datamover will be connected to a new VMAX frame with lots of capacity.
Question is
When the new DM is installed and configured, what are the steps required to migrate the small/initial NFS share that was created to the project from the old DM to the new DM? then expand the filesystem as per project requirements.

If the small/initial NFS share is a whole filesystem, then IP-Replicator could be used.
If it is only part of a FS, then maybe server_archive or a host based copy tool like rsnyc

I do not think, cloning VG8 Luns and presenting them to a media server will give you any benefit. I doubt the media server will be able to backup the data in a useful way, because it does not know about the volume allocation on the luns.

Yes, the product is called SnapSure and it is included in the Local Protection Suite. It works at the filesystem level.

Thanks Adam... I'll look for that... right now I just found a document
Using TimeFinder®/FS, NearCopy, and FarCopy on VNX
Is it the same?

Thanks Peter for helping out.
Another question... is there a snapshot functionality with VG8? like take a snapshot of a FS or NFS share then mount it as a different NFS share or someting similar?

this is dependent on what you want to achieve.
The mentioned product (TimeFinder) is creating 1:1 physical copies on special Symmetrix volumes (BCVs).
Take a look at page 9 of the manual.
Snapsure is creating Snaps (aka checkpoints) of a FS (logical copies), see page 21ff of the mentioned manual.

No. SnapSure runs on the DataMovers and works on filesystems. Those sound like block level products.

SnapSure and TimeFinder/FS are both working on filesystems.
TimeFinder/FS is creating physical clones of a FS, while SnapSure is creating a logical point in time copy of a FS.
A TimeFinder/FS copy needs exactly the same space as the original FS (in detail original volume), while a SnapSure checkpoints needs only the space of the changes since creation.
A Snapsure checkpoint can only coexist with the original FS, but a TimeFinder/FS is independent of the original FS.

Now we are going to use SnapSure... Thanks Peter and AdamFox for this.
question is, can the snap and restore commands be executed from client side?

they have to be executed on the control station

Thanks for that Dynamox...
another seprate issue. we are running out of space in the exisitng frame where the vg8 is connected.
Are there any other specifics that needs to be done in order to connect the VG8 to a second/new VMAX?
Is it just zoning and masking the data volumes?
