Help to configure files systems on Celerra NS-G8

Hello,

I have to configure 10 files systems (CIFS) on Celerra NS-G8 which has 4 Data Movers (3 actives and 1 stand by).

I want to know the advantages of using Virtual Data Movers.

Which is the best configuration using Virtual Data Movers? Should I configure one VDM per Physical DM? Should I configure 10 VDM (one for each File System)?

Any suggestions please…

Thanks

The number of VMDs doesnt make any difference in terms of performance

are all 10 file systems going to be managed by the same person/team ? Also do you have any plans for replication ?

I would suggest to start by reading the VDM and CIFS manuals.

There are two main features of using VDMs:

- The VDM contains the config info for the CIFS servers so that it can be replicated and failed over to another system

- A VDM defines which file systems can be accessed (both through regular shares and the C$ admin share) – without a VDM a CIFS server Admin could see ALL file systems that are mounted on a physical data mover

So in terms of how many VDMs you want / need:

- How many CIFS servers do you need ?

- Is is permissible or wanted that one CIFS servers admin see’s the other CIFS servers file systems?

- Do you need to be able to failover CIFS servers (and their data) individually ?

Regards

Rainer

@ rainer:

-           We need to have 10 File System but I don't know how to dispatch them on the VDMs (or CIFS servers, I don't know exactly what to do)

-          Is is permissible or wanted that one CIFS servers admin see’s the other CIFS servers file systems?

->        yes the admin should see all CIFS servers.

-          Do you need to be able to failover CIFS servers (and their data) individually ?

->        All I need is to keep all running in case of Data Mover failure

Then just create ONE VDM and as many CIFS servers inside the VDM as you need

One VDM is sufficient for best performance??

I have also Anti virus and ndmp...
