generate monitoring on celerra file system
Hello EveryOne ! ..
Can I automate or generate a report /monitoring on the Celerra 704G ( only CIFS ) ?Here's the scenario:
I have plethora of requests coming from CIFS users to increase the NAS space on their network drive. The request usually comes where in customer
asks for increase in space on their folder . And in order to cater to that request I need to extend the File system by getting the share information from the user.
Here's an e.g :
cutomer unable to save files on \\nas5\ufs4$\Trauma
"Trauma" is the folder where customer is trying to save data.
For this, i need to see how much space in availabe on that network drive by mapping it.
Then, go to filesystem and extend it by certain amount .
Such request comes in inordinate amount and my customer donr 't want to send mails over and over for space increase , so my question is :
Is there a way i can Monitor this usage so that i can Xtend the fs before customer shoots a mail? Whenever the fs is on the verge of getting filled up i get an alert and work on it on priority, Is there any third party tool i can use ?
Please advise!!
Thank you for reading

have you considered automatic file system extension feature of Celerra ?
File system and automatic file system extension
You can create or extend file systems with AVM storage pools and configure the file system
to automatically extend as needed. You can enable automatic file system extension on a file
system when it is created, or you can enable and disable it at any later time by modifying
the file system. The options that work with automatic file system extension are:
◆ HWM
◆ Maximum size
◆ Virtual Provisioning
The HWM is the point at which the file system must be extended to meet the usage demand.
The default HWM is 90 percent.
The default supported maximum size for any file system is 16 TB.
With automatic file system extension, the maximum size is the size to which the file system
could grow, up to the supported 16 TB. Setting the maximum size is optional with automatic
file system extension, but mandatory with Virtual Provisioning. With Virtual Provisioning
enabled, users and applications see the maximum size, while only a portion of that size is
actually allocated to the file system.
Automatic file system extension allows the file system to grow as needed without system
administrator intervention, making it easier to meet system operations requirements
continuously, without interruptions.

Sure – generating an event when a file system fills up is a standard feature
You can specific to have an Email sent, a SNMP trap generated or a script to be executed
Just take a look at the Events manual and configure it using GUI or nas_event
I would also suggest to get familiar with file system auto extension and look at using treequotas
There is also third party quota management software (NTP quota or Nothern Storage) that has more functionality but at an extra license cost.
They can for example point to a web portal where the user himself can change its quotas

Hello Rainer and Dynamox ,
Can you guys help me with some third party tools I can use for celerra environment to track something like - performance , usage , or just any tools you guys have been using on celerra for automation or generating reports that would be benificial for the administrator as well as customer.
Only pointers will be helpful -i will do rest of the research on it.
Thanks in advance!

Rainer actually pointed me to MRTG for collecting network interface performance and create nice graphs like this. There are probably other counters that you could graph with MRTG but i have not explored it further.

In later versions of DART (6.0), the server_stats command is excellent for reporting on performance and usage. You can report on just about everything the datamovers can track. We use scripts to collect PAX statistics from backups, report on CIFS connections, AV stats and so on. In earlier versions of DART (5.6), the utility of the command varies.
You can output statistics as .CSV, for easy importing into Excel. A fun exercise is to learn how to write a cron job to collect data, write the .CSV file to disk, then email the report out. Better still, you can write the output to a share on the Celerra, to give your customer visibility into their usage.
Finally, the Celerra Monitor utility can report on usage and performance over time, and provides the ability to export the charts and graphs. You can find this tool in the Celerra Manager.
Thanks!

Or get EMC Data Protection Advisor – the license for a Celerra isn’t expensive

look at Rainer's recommendation ..Data protection advisor. EMC can get you an VM with DPA eval .so you can see if it makes sense and gives you what you want.

Hello Rainer/ dynamox / Karl ,
Is there any EMC tool with advance license available that i can use to get share related information?
My customer is ready to go for the license but i need to give proper explanation on what it is capable of.
I tried Northern suite , it is indeed useful , but again it come with extra cost . So i am looking for EMC 's own tool.
Please let me know
Thanks !!
