celerra os basics

Hi all,

Can someone please answer the below basic questions.

1)where does Celerra CS OS reside and what is the OS type(windows kind/unix kind, etc)?

2)where dones DART OS reside and what is the OS type(windows kind/unix kind, etc)?

3)Does Celerra commands follow a convention? If YES please support your answer with a document.

Thanks in Advance.

I'll give it a shot, but I'm sure others will chime in. If you have a PowerLink account, you should be able to view the documentation there. I'll be the first to admit that PowerLink isn't the most user friendly site.

1. The Celerra control station (CS) is running a modified version of RedHat Linux.  It resides in storage on the control station itself. I like to think of the control station as the middle-man for interfacing with the x-blade/data mover for all administrative tasks. The x-blade/data mover, in turn, communicates with the storage processors for acessing the  backend storage.

2. DART is a modified UNIX kernel with additional functionality added to operate as a file server. It is developed directly by EMC. DART resides on the x-blade/data mover which gives the Celerra its NAS capabilities.

3. The commands for the Celerra are run on the control station. They do follow a convention, but there is too much to list here. You can view the documents by going here and clicking on the documenation CD for your version of DART. The zip file contains a command reference document with all of the commands.

If I missed anything or if it needs clarification, I'm sure the community will be sure to get my back . Best of luck to you.

I hope I didn't fall victim to somebody looking for help on their cert homework or something. Checking the other post from this member has me suspicious. Either way, there is some good info here for anybody looking for the basics.

Why are you asking ?

Celerra CLI commands are mostly named like the Unix commands but with a prefix

Server_xxx for commands that are specific to a data mover like server_df or server_export

Nas_xxx for commands that aren’t data mover specific like nas_fs or nas_quotas

Plus a few others like fs_ckpt or fs_dedupe

See the command reference manual on Powerlink and look at /nas/bin and /nas/sbin

I would suggest to start with the VNX or Celerra Architecture white paper from Powerlink or emc.com

The OS has three parts:

Control Station runs a Linux based OS that’s stored on the CS internal disk drive with config data (/nbsnas) also on the vault disks

Data Movers (file NAS services) run DART – proprietrary Microkernel that is stored on the vault drives

Storage Processors (block SAN services) run a proprietary OS that is also stored on the vault drives.

Vault drives are the first 5 disks in the first enclosure that are also used to dump the write cache in case of power failure
