Celerra - CIFS share + Office 2010 files and Windows 7 save error
Hi
We have strange issue on some of our CIFS shares provided by a Celerra.
In the past the users have been working with Windows XP and Office 2010 without any issues.
When a user gets its client updated to Windows 7 he cannot save Office Files (Excel, Word, Powerpoint) anymore on the share.
The message: "The file is currently in use. Try again later" is displayed.
Nothing else changed just the client OS from Windows XP to Windows 7.
NTFS rights should be ok. Even if the user has "Full Control" NTFS rights on the share the error shows up.
The following tasks eliminate the issue but are not usable as a final solution
- When SMB v2 is disabled on the Windows 7 client the user can save the files without error
- For testing we added a user to the local Administrators group on the NAS but removed the NTFS rights for the local Administrators group on the NTFS share/folder to exclude NTFS permission issues. In that case the user was granted rights on NTFS level via its normal Domain-Group and was member of the local Administrators group on the NAS. And here saving the files also worked.
It seems all quite strange.
Does anybody have an idea what could cause this behavior with Windows 7 and SMB v2.1?
Any tips would be appreciated.
Thanks
Regards
Markus

Thanks for your answer.
The issues occurs for all users accessing the NAS system. For testing we created a new share and assigned the permissions to this new share. The issue still showed up.
We also tested from a out of the box Windows 7 (just basic installation, no policies) and the issue showed up, too.

Check the Policies on the machine, where user is trying to save the file. There could be any security policy conflict or may be you need to re-assign permission (for this user) specially to the folder where the user is trying to save his file.

Can you please re-check the Read/Write access to the share while configuring it from storage end. Change the permissions and then check (i.g. don't give any permission once and then check, again give full r/w permissions then check).

It's an older version.
It is: NAS-Code: 6.0.61-0
Strange thing is that with Win XP (using SMB1) everything works, with Windows 7 (using SMB 2.1) the error shows up.
Deleting, renaming, creating files and folders works.
Also saving other than Office files works

Please open a Service Request for this issue.
As a workaround, configure the compname for not using SMB2

So it may be the issue with compatibility among Windows 7, SMB 2.1 and Office...why don't you give a try to SMB 1. It might work...

Yes we have already tested disabling SMB2 on the Windows 7 client and it solves the issue.
But this could only be a temporary workaround, because on other Celerra systems we are using it works with SMB2.
And we also don't want to introduce a new OS with improvements in SMB protocol and then go back to the old XP version

This was the reason I was recommending opening a Service Request.
My recommendation was, temporarily disabling SMB2 on the DM, not on the windows client.
I assume, your issue is fixed in one of the higher 6.0 versions, but this needs to be verified.

On issues like this – esp. if your NAS code is over a year old – its always advisable to upgrade the latest
