Celerra cifs server domain switching

Dear all,

Please spare your valuable time to answer the following questions:

a) I need to move a production CIFS server to another domain. How do i go about it?. I tried to do this via GUI: unjoined cifs server from domain and attempted to join it to new domain, but the domain field was grayed out and it wouldnt let me mention new domain.  CLI didnt help either.

b) I have read the emc200111 which asks to delete the CIFS server and recreate it in new domain. Is this the only way? If not, please suggest different way.

c) Will deleting the cifs server and recreating it in new domain maintain all the local groups and shares?.

d) If answer to question 'c' is "yes" then, if i delete the cifs server and recreate using the same name, will all the local groups and shares automatically get associated with it?.

e) Please outline the steps needed to join a CIFS server to a different domain so that all local groups and shares are unaffected.

f) If i rename a production CIFS server, will all the local groups and shares work the same.? (I assume that after the rename, old server name will not work and the following should work:  \\newservername\oldsharename).

Thanks a ton

Hi,

the solution was corrected.

The CIFS server name should be the same.

Thanks for catching this.

Hi,

The only way to change the domain while keeping the same CIFS server name is to remove and recreate the CIFS server with the same name.

If you use the same name, it will keep the local groups database and the shares associated with it.

Primus emc200111 has the steps to achieve what you need, but also remember you must have the domain with it's DNS servers on the Data Mover configuration ( server_dns command ).

If you are not comfortable with this procedure, I suggest to contact your local EMC representative, or open a support ticket.

Thank you again Gustavo.

a) Could you please be a little more detailed on what you mean by "you must have the domain with it's DNS servers on the Data Mover configuration ( server_dns command )."

b) The primus outlines the following steps. Step 3 does not use the same compname to join the cifs server to the other domain. I am confused here. We can  use the same compname in step 3 to join to the other domain, correct? :

  1. Unjoin the existing CIFS server(S) from the domain

    Example: server_cifs server_2 -U compname=cifs,domain=mouse.com,admin=*******

  2. Remove the cifs server configuration from the Celerra Data Mover or Virtual Data Mover respectively

    Example: server_cifs server_2 -delete compname=cifs

  3. Recreate the CIFS server on the Data Mover or Virtual Data Mover specifying the new domain name and interface.

    Example: server_cifs server_2 -J compname=mouse,domain=mickeymouse.com,interface=10_x_ x_x,admin=*******

Thank you very much

Hi,

Make sure the new domain is added to the DM. The server_dns command will tell you this.

Regarding the compnames being different, I will contact the author and clarify.
