Can a user create shares at \\servername\C$ (in the root directory)?

I have a request from an admin user.

He asked: can he create shares at \\servername\c$ ?

How?  Thanks

There is no special EMC MMC snapin for this – you just user the regular Microsoft Shared Folders snapin (the Celerra has implemented the native Microsoft API there)

What do you mean with “creating in the root directory” ?

C$ points to the data mover rootfs – you don’t create shares there – you create them a level below on the data file systems

Why shouldn´t this work?

This dependent of the rights the "admin" user has gotten.

Please check if this "admin" user is also a member of the local administrator group of the "servername"

Yes – if he uses Microsoft MMC or rmtshare.exe

FOr some reasons, domain admin can't create shares.

Where can I download MS mmc snap-in for Celerra?

Thanks.

you don't need any special snap-ins. Simply right click on my computer, select Manage, right click on Computer Management and select Connect to another computer. Enter name of you CIFS server and once connected you can go to shares and create new directories and share them at the same time.

You confirmed what I believed that is \\servername\c$ is where filesystem located and it is not the place for creating shares.  Therefore Admin user can not create shares at that level.

We have been using My Computer > Connect to another computer > etc. to do administration of nas server also.

I heard of The Celerra Data Mover Management MMC Snap-in.  It is available from the Celerra Network Server applications and Tools CD.  By any chance, is it available for download?   Thanks.

Am I missing something?  I do not see it in Support > Product and Diagnostic Tools > Celerra Tools > NS-120, NS-480.

I doesnt make sense to create shares on the data mover rootfs since its very small and used internally – so we don’t allow it

If you have few file systems I suggest to create a D$ E$ F$ … share per file system and tell your Windows admins to use that instead for creating shares

That’s often easier than explaining them the data mover structure and “clicking” through the root to the file system
