Best practice for VNX Unified storage

So, we have got a new VNX Unified storage system upgrade.

I'm very familiar with AVM, and how we used to design for that.

To recap, for example, for FC disk, for each raid group we create two luns, one to each SP.

Then, give both LUN to the NAS.

Now, with Unified, the block portion can run on storage pool.

I've gone through the new NAS 7.1 Filesystem management with AVM document, and it mentions that, if we want to use the AVM, then provision in the way the AVM will use it; e.g. provision storage LUNs, in pairs, balanced between the SPs.

What it doesn't mention, is

1) Raid group approach better, or Storage pool?

2) Recommended size of the LUN to create in the pool?

Thanks,
Kelvin

It is always a tradeoff between functionality, flexibility and performance

Classic raidgroups can get you the highest performance

There difference isn’t that big though – you might not notice it depending on your workload

Using pool based LUNs (thick for file) you get better flexibility in terms of sharing with SAN usage and features like FAST VP

If you do use pool based LUNs look at the VNX best practices for performance – there are guidelines there on how many LUNs to create and what size

I believe the wizard will also create them according to the BPP
