Windows Client taking too long backing up to Avamar 7.3 Grid

One of my Windows Server 2008 R2 servers is taking too long to back up to my Avamar/DataDomain 7.3 Grid.  I let the backups run for 24 hours, but they don't complete.  Can you offer any advice on troubleshooting the problem?

Here is some information that I hope will help.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2; 64bit
  • Plug-in: Windows File System
  • (C:) and (G:) drives
  • Physical Server ( not a vm)
  • Installed memory (RAM): 8.00 GB (5.98 GB usable)
  • Resource Monitor while avtar.exe runs shows 4.2 GB in use; 1.8 GB available.
  • Total Files: 175,355
    • Size of file cache: 6.5 MB
    • Size of hash cache: 201 MB
    • Avamar Client 7.3

There isn't enough information here to help unfortunately.

If opening a service request it would greatly reduce the time it takes us to investigate the issue if you could include a full set of information discussed in the following article

The way I fixed the problem was by creating a new dataset that only included a small amount of the total data that needed to be backed up.  I then ran the job and it completed successfully.  After that I added more directories to the data set little by little so that eventually I had all drives in the data set.  By doing it little by little I was able to get all the drives in the end.

the FIRST backup of any server can take a longer time to run then the second.

I have some servers who have taken 2 days for the first backup

that is why each client is set to "allow overrun on first backup"
