VM Backup, file/folder-level restore
Networker 8.2.1.4
Windows 2012r2
Vmware 5.5
Hello all,
I'm having trouble locating the reason why I cannot perform individual file/folder restores from a VMware backup. Im digging through the EMC Networker and VMWare Guide for 8.2 SP1, and I dont see the options it is telling me to look for, for a VM file-level restore. Performing VMware full virtual machine restores works fine, but I'm just not seeing the options for file/folder restores. Could this be because my VMware actions backup method is set to VirtualMachine, rather than VMDK?

You need to first RDP into the VM whose data you need to recover, then open the browser from the same VM and point it to https://your_vba_appliance:8543/flr When asked provide the OS credential (Administrator) of the VM where you are logged in.

You cannot perform File Level Recovery (FLR) from Vmware web client, you need to point your browser to VBA appliance iteslef.

Hello Amol.
Do I actually point it at my VBA appliance, or the client itself. Trying https://client_name:8543/flr does nothing, and https://your_vba_appliance:8543/flr takes me to my data restore login, but will not accept any of the credentials i use to access my VBA with. Just tells me "Login failed: Cannot locate vm in Vcenter. I can see that vba vm in my Vcenter. I'm researching that now.

Amol, I did play around with this yesterday, but got a bit frustrated once I discovered that Flash must be enabled. We have about 1100 vm servers, and we dont enable Flash. I can only assume that this is for security reasons. Before we can perform any file-level restores, we must first put the client server into "desktop experience" mode, reboot it, and then it appears that the file-level options are now available. Otherwise, there are no options at all under the Internet Explorer add-ons to enable flash player. I performed this on a test VM I built for this purpose. But rebooting a production system during business hours is not something we can easily do. However, the bottom line is that i can now access the file-level restore features. Thank you for the help!

Networker 9 is about to be released soon, once you upgrade the VBA to newer version (v1.5.0. ) that comes with NW 9.0, the restriction for FLASH will go away.
The new VBA has all new HTML5 based UI.
