Upgrade avamar clients using Avamar Client Manager

The Client Downloads page, which is the web page served by the Avamar server, and the Client Manager facility are two separate items on an Avamar server. The When Remote Proactive Services upgrades the Avamar server they upgrade the the Client Downloads, but not the Client Manager's Client Installers. This is done by a separate optional operation which is very simple.

First, I would recommend that you download the manual Avamar Client Downloads and Client Manager Installer Upgrades Technical Note from the Avamar Server Documents page in support.emc.com. Start by reading the Client Glossary page. This will help you understand all of the various Client components and features provided by your Avamar Server, and how they all work together.

This document also contains instructions for upgrading your Client Manager's Client Installers. But first you need the links for the Client Installer AVP package so you can obtain the Client installer Upgrade kit.

If you still have the initial scheduling emails sent to you from the Remote Proactive Upgrade team, there is an attachment PDF file called "Customer Guide for Avamar 7.1.1-145 Clients". This document has the links for the Client Installer package for version 7.1.1-145.If you cant locate this email and its attachment, please reply to this post and I will arrange to get it to you.

Installation is very easy. You just drop the package into a special directory on your Avamar server, and the Avinstaller takes care of the rest, automatically. Make sure that you follow the instructions, because improperly dropping the package into the special directory, can cause problems if not done correctly.

Just as a bit of background information, as to how the Client manager's client downloads work, the Client Installers package actually seeds the Avamar server's GSAN with deduped versions of the Client software. When it is time for the updating the client software version on a client system, the Client Manager instructs the client to request a special restore from the Avamar server, which then restores the the new client version to the client and makes the update.
