Succeeded w/exception but can't figure out what's wrong

Hello.

We have a System State backup which was working fine until last week. Since then, it succeeds but with exception. I tried to troubleshoot but couldn't find much error related messages on the logs.

At Avamar logs, I could only find this error related entrys:

Command failed (1 error, exit code 10020: completed with errors, client log should be examined)

END avtar log 2016-09-01 GMT Daylight Time  (0 warnings, 1 error, 0 fatal errors)

At the client, could only find an additional

What could it be? This backup was working without any kind of issue for months.

Hey guys.

I was able to solve the issue by replacing a couple of occurrences of this path string on the registry, with the new correct Symantec path. Backup now completes successfully.

About this issue. I recall now that this has already happened in the past, but only noticed it was the same issue after seeing that the problem was a Symantec path. Somehow I couldn't noticed it at first.

What triggered it out, must have been an antivirus update. By the other time this issue occurred, I opened a ticket with EMC Support which helped me a lot with troubleshooting, and there is an interesting KB for this sort of issues.

If anyone runs into errors like this, if the registry edit doesn't cut it, also check https://support.emc.com/kb/428680.

Thank you guys.

First, have you tried running the backup On-Demand versus on the schedule?  Do you still see the error occur in the On-Demand backup?

If so, have you tried increasing the verbosity of the log file within Avamar?  Go into the Group for this backup.  Select "Dataset" and "Options".  Increase the informational message level to "Many Informationals" and run a backup.  If you still don't get enough detail, increase to "All Informationals".  Failing that, click on "Show Advanced Options" and check the box for "Enable degbugging messages".

So far, we've only had one or two strange errors that revealed themselves with more Informationals, but it's considerably easier than parsing the (wordy) debug messages.

Let us know if that helps!

Hi Karl.

Backup on-demand also produces the same result.

But I guess there is no informational message level selecting option for this backup type. It's VSS, not file system (I know file system has this option). Most I can find, when I enable Advanced Options, is the Enable debugging messages. I might try the debugging messages but I'll probably loose myself on a huge log.

Any further advice?

Can you post the complete log with any sensitive information redacted? When the log summary says there's an error I have never seen a log that didn't have at least one error message in it.

Hello Ian.

I’ve attached the log.

Unless I missed something, those where the only references I found to an error.

Thank you for having a look.

I don't see an attachment in the thread. How did you attach the log?

I sent it attached to the reply-email, from my previous post. I guess it doesn't keep the attach.

Now I tryed to edit and add the file to the post but couldn't find a way. How can I do it?

The log is too huge to copy/paste it here.

I've noticed that the backup status turned from successful to success with exceptions one day after a few Windows patches were installed. But I couldn't find any error on the windows event logs by the time backup runs. It may be related but still couldn't find any lead to what could be happening.

About the logs I was attempting to attach, can you tell me how to attach it to the thread? I can't find any way to do it.

Thank you.

I'm not sure if customers have the ability to create documents in the Avamar product community but it can't hurt to try. If you scroll to the top and click Create => Document, will it let you put a document here? If so, that's probably going to be the easiest way to get the log posted. Once you have it posted, please add a comment with the link to this discussion.

If you're not able to post the log here, please zip it up and e-mail it to me at firstname (dot) lastname (at)dell.com.

Hi.

I was now able to insert the file. I was unfamiliar with this file attachment system. Here it goes:

Log for the unknown backup issue

Thank you for taking a look.

2016-09-02 12:32:02 avtar Error <7553>: Specified source path "c:\program files (x86)\symantec\symantec endpoint protection\12.1.6608.6300.105\bin64\smcinst.exe" does not exist; ignored

This is what's causing your exception.

This filename is being given to us as a critical file that needs to be backed up but we're not finding it when we go looking for it.

I am unable to access the uploaded logs, but as per Ian's comment, It is correct that we are not able to find the file that we need during the time of Backup.

You can go into the diskshadow prompt and then enter the 'list writers detailed' and then look for that particular file. We get the metadata of files from the writer.

Also, if this is a newer OS >2k8, we have an option that might help, its listed in the MORE OPTIONS for backup :

When backup detects missing Windows System State files, complete the backup successfully without exceptions

Please note, utilize this option only when you are certain that its safe to ignore exceptions for file that actually doesn't exists.

Thank you Ian for pointing it out. Somehow I was unable to find that line in the log.

Pankaj thanks for the hints.

This file is really not a problem, and it doesn't exist indeed. Any suggestions on how to remove it from the writers list?

Hello,

I am not able to get that KB.  The link says it "is permission required" so it won't open for me. If I do a search for that KB, it's not finding anything. Can you repost here the KB information? It seems helpful.

Thank you!
