Minimum requirements for Avamar client?

Is there anywhere that details the minimum recommended requirements for a Windows Avamar client? I have a VM with only one virtual CPU and avtar.exe is spiking the CPU usage considerably during backup. I'm wondering whether it's just underpowered, as avtar.exe only runs up to 50% CPU on my multi-CPU VMs.

Avamar backups, like most proceses will try to run as quickly as they can and consume whatever CPU cycles are available.  If you're finding the CPU is spiking for long periods of time during the backup it could be because avtar is performing a great deal of file 'chunking' and the underlying storage is able to supply data to the CPU quickly enough to keep it extremely busy.

Take a look at the backup logs and you can observe this directly

  • KB 335281 - How to interpret avtar backup log status lines

If the behaviour is causing problems for other applications running in the OS you could consider throttling avtar's CPU usage as described in the following article.

  • KB 335284 - How to throttle an Avamar client's consumption of system resources (CPU, network, I/O & memory)

As the article says, just be aware that by throttling CPU usage you will most likely elongate the backup run time and have to put up with a lesser problem, but for longer.
