Java and Avamar 18?
Avamar Administrator is requiring Java 8 JRE with requires us to buy commercial licensing for every user who uses it unless we run old versions from April 2019 or earlier with many unpatched security vulnerabilities.
The admins using Avamar Administrator are using it for the sole purpose of restoring data (usually after an end user accidentally deletes or overwrites one of their documents on a Windows file server).
What workarounds are available? Can we restore files using just the web interface without Java?
Is there a way to use Avamar Administrator with OpenJDK instead of Oracle’s JRE? If so, how?
Is the Java requirement going to go away with future versions of Avamar Administrator?

Since the Avamar Administrator applications requires Java 8 for installation, is licensing Java 8 JRE for commercial use included in the purchase so we can download the updated versions of 8 (such as 8 Update 261) without having to also purchase a support subscription from Oracle?
The Java download page says:
Important Oracle Java License Update
The Oracle Java License has changed for releases starting April 16, 2019.
The new Oracle Technology Network License Agreement for Oracle Java SE is substantially different from prior Oracle Java licenses. The new license permits certain uses, such as personal use and development use, at no cost -- but other uses authorized under prior Oracle Java licenses may no longer be available. Please review the terms carefully before downloading and using this product. An FAQ is available here.
Commercial license and support is available with a low cost Java SE Subscription.

Here is DellEMC's position on Java with its products.:
https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/530949
"Our Dell EMC Data Protection products will embed Oracle JVM/JRE and subsequent updates. Embedded Java will be installed as part of data protection package installation. With this approach, Java updates will be provided by Dell EMC as part of our new product releases as well as hot fixes for supported releases."
Current versions include the JRE with the console. You can also use the AUI web interface, which has a lot more functionality since Version 19.1. Avamar Version 18.x will be EOSL by the middle of next year.
