Documentation on Exchange 2013 DAG backup best practices with Avamar

Is there any documentation on the best practices for backing up Exchange 2013 DAGs with Avamar? I've read through the Exchange VSS guide and the Operational Best Practices guide but neither tell me whether or not (for example) a federated backup is "best practice" or not.
