Backup Error 17964

I started having issues backing up a client.  I uninstalled the client, re-installed, re-activated and it still will not backup.  I keep receiving the following errors:

avtar Error <0000>: flushPendingExtents: encountered an error writing existing file data via synthesis now (Log #2)

avtar Error <0000>: met the limit on t0 refs in an t1 segment failed when writing to a file in a container for backup, length 72 bytes at offset 7208057188, remaining bytes 72 (Log #2)

avtar FATAL <5352>: MAIN: Unhandled standard exception failed when writing to a file in a container for backup, length 72 bytes at offset 7208057188, remaining bytes 72 (Log #2)

so I then kicked off an on-demand backup and choose to 'check client-side caches and report inconsistencies' and also 'check and repair client-side caches' to see if I could get any other information as to what is going on.  I then got the following error:

avtar Error <17917>: Unable to validate the cache. To validate, do not set the DDR options. (Log #1)

avtar FATAL <17964>: Backup is incomplete because file "/STAGING/b98b1a0b853f503a7211db6f2d12eff3bf9e82c6/BACKUP-F3C27EFC42E00B390C32BDA353BA6F1D39CE2D8D/ddr_files.xml" is missing (Log #1)

this is more meaningful information for me but now I am not sure what to do with it

I guess just retire the client and let the current backups expire at their current expiration and then just re-add the client?

Hello,

Please try to rename or delete file cache.

I moved the cache files to another folder, just in case, and kicked a backup off - worked like a charm.

For the guest level backup of an windows server where we see this error has VSS system state backup and filesystem backup triggers at same time. (However one will be Q'd). Is this a concern for this error.

This issue is for Image backup - Avvcbimage error. Are you not running image backup ?

2015-06-23 22:34:41 avvcbimage Error <0000>

Avtar takes too long to remove snappshots.  If it takes more than 5 minutes, it times out. To solve this issue, you need to increase timeout.

Hi Pawan,

Is there any other way to resolve the issue from avamar side rather than deleting the cache files, because we have nearly 100 servers which is showing this error.

Thank you for your responses.

The error message what you have posted here, can be resolved by adding a flag in dataset to increase time out, but the information is restricted, I should not share it here.

Deleting cache file can cause performance issue. In this thread, I mentioned to delete or rename cache file for the error -

avtar Error <0000>: flushPendingExtents: encountered an error writing existing file data via synthesis now

In this issue, cache file was probably corrupted. But in your case, issue is different. As I suggested earlier, please contact to EMC support and refer those articles.

I agree with you for deleting the cache files but doing that for 100 clients is a big task. Raised a support case, even they are suggesting the same.

Thank you.

Raised a support case, even they are suggesting the same.

For which issue Support suggested to delete cache file, for the issue which you have posted or for the issue which is there at beginning of this discussion ?

If you are facing issue similar to this -

avtar Error <0000>: flushPendingExtents: encountered an error writing existing file data via synthesis now

Then I would suggest, rename cache file only for one client, choose a client with minimum data and see if it works for you.

If you do it for a client which is having huge data, there can be performance issue.

Pawan
