Avamar Virtual Edition Backup To NAS Storage Possible ?

Background

Customer has 3 VXRAIL Nodes with 3 Socket running VMware

Customer wants to backup his VMware VM's

We have proposed DPS Suite for VMware 3 Socket License PLUS a  DELL NX3240 Storage for Avamar to store the backups

We are being told THIS WILL NOT WORK !  And that we  need to have a Data Domain Virtual Edition owning up the capacity of the DELL NX 3240 for this to work

My Question is why do i need a DDVE in the middle - when all I want to do is classic Avamar source based deduplication and backing it up to a NAS Store. (Like the way Veeam software works )

Kindly let me know if technically what we are solutioning  works ? And if there are any limitations we need to be aware of ?

Thanks in advance !

Warm regards

I should also point out the most obvious limitation is that the customer's backups will be stored in GSAN. Migrating them to Data Domain later would be a (months) long, painful project.

The Dell Data Protection world has been moving away from GSAN (Avamar internal) storage for some time. GSAN storage is not going to be around forever and many newer features like Instant Access and Linux Fast Incremental are only supported with DD storage. I would not recommend trying to swim against the current like this.

Thank you for that insight. We are facing a combination of Veeam + NAS Storage as competition in quite a few accounts and wondering how is it that we can do it as simply as them ? Meaning ....Avamar Virtual Edition on a VMware Data Store and having an NFS Mount Point into the Avamar Virtual Machine to store the dumps ( assuming the PAT tool certifies the performance of the NAS /NS Mount point share). This should work shouldnt it ?

Generating new GSAN backups is not a winning strategy.

Avamar has never supported writing backup data to NFS exports mounted at the OS level. I assume you're referring to having the AVE's VMDKs stored on the NAS device and attached at the VM level.

However, this would still be writing backups to GSAN storage. At this stage, you should not be deploying such a configuration in new environments.
