Avamar Many to Many Replication
Hello all
I have been struggling with this for a several days now and I am hopeful that one of you will be able to help out.
First here is our configuration:
Site 1
Avamar Node 1 (Physical)
DatadomainA (DDA)
DatadomainX (DDX)
Site 2
Avamar Node 2 (Physical)
DatadomainB (DDB)
DatadomainY (DDY)
Node 1 writes its backups to DDA
Node 1's backups are then replicated across the wire to DDB
As you can guess
Node 2 writes its backups to DDB
Node 2's backups are then replicated across the wire to DDA
We were running low on free space on DDA and DDB. After talking with our EMC guy we decided that we wanted to start using our older Datadomains (DDX & DDY) to store some of the replicated backups to. We know that we will not be able to move existing replicated backups and are fine with replicating backups from now forward.
I have followed the instructions that I have been able to find in this forum, and in the "Avamar Data Domain Integration guide":
- Create a new domain on Node 1
- Let replication occur from Node 1 to Node 2
- On Node 2 add a storage mapping selecting the newly created domain on Node 1 and DDY as the replication target
- On Node 1 move the VM to the newly created domain on Node 2.
- Let replication occur
I have also tried this going the other way and as of yet I have not been able to get Avamar to use DDX or DDY for replication.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Jamison

Hi Jamison,
I read your question couple of times and finally drew it on a paper to understand your requirement.
I understood what exactly you are trying to do here but I got bit confused at the end. So I will try to answer based on my understanding.
Per my understanding, you can use below steps to make this work-
1. Integrated DDX with Node 1 and DDY with Node 2. (I believe its already done)
2. Create datasets to use newly integrated DDs on both Node 1 and Node 2. (I believe its already done)
3. Now Create a domain on Avamar server and move clients in it. Basically we can use this domain to write all the backups to new DD. For example, on Node1, create a Domain named Node1DDX and move those clients in it which you want to replicate to DDY on Node2. This is important for easier management and replication data selection.
4. When you create a replication group, select this domain to replicate to Node2.
Now, on Node2, we want that replicated data must write to DDY. Since we have DDB and DDY integrated on Node2, we need to define storage mapping on Node2 and choose DDY as the target.
The instructions to define DDY as the target on Node2, you can find in EMC Avamar and EMC Data Domain System Integration Guide.
Once it works, you can follow same steps on Node2 to replciate data on Node1.
I hope it will help.

Thanks for the reply!
I am in the middle of moving my stuff from one office to another site so I will take a look at everything you mentioned in your reply as soon as I can.
One thing that I unintentionally left out was that we are using folders in vCenter and having Avamar grab certain folders to back up.
Don't think that will make a difference but figured I should mention it.
Thanks

- As far I know, it should not make any difference.
