Avamar "Licensed" Capacity

Can anyone explain to me how Avamar Licensing is figured?

Is it based on the "Data Protected" number you see from the GUI?  Or is there something else?

I guess what I am asking is "If EMC was to audit us, what do they base this number on?"

Correct. Stand-alone Avamar licensing is based on total back-end capacity, not utilized capacity.

I'm not familiar with licensing on the Data Domain side so I can't comment on that. I'm also not 100% sure on what changes if you're licensed under Data Protection Suite since that's based on capacity but covers NetWorker, Avamar, Data Domain and DPA. You might want to have a chat with your account team on that.

The total capacity of the system is listed when you run mccli server show-prop, e.g.:

admin@testgrid:~/>: mccli server show-prop

0,23000,CLI command completed successfully.

Attribute                        Value

-------------------------------- ----------------------------

State                            Full Access

Active sessions                  0

Total capacity                   7.8 TB

Capacity used                    777.9 GB

Server utilization               10.0%

Bytes protected                  1,003.8 GB

Bytes protected quota            Not configured

Hope this helps.

Licensing is based on per-TB back-end storage capacity. Avamar grids are typically licensed for their full storage capacity up front so I wouldn't worry about it unless you know specifically that the systems were purchased with more physical capacity than licensed capacity.

So if I understand what you are saying, we should have the capacity license to match how much actual capacity we have (Avamar Grid + Data Domain).

Not actually how much we are currently storing?

Is there are report or command I should use to get this number, I believe that your comment "unless you know specifically that the systems were purchased with more physical capacity than licensed capacity." Is True, In addition we are planning to purchase more capacity soon and I just wanted to understand the licensing model to make sure I can keep our vendor in check.

Thanks.

If we have a 5 TB of DPAD suite license, is it true that for each storage like Avamar, DD, networker we can have 5 TB license ( my question might be mean) , I am not clear on this one. please help.

I believe that a 5TB Data Protection Suite entitles you to 5TB total to split up amongst the DPSG products, not 5TB for each. Your account team should be able to answer this question definitively.
